Dorado spring issues

Got a 2010 Dorado. It was working fine, then I went to soften it up a little, and there's now something quite wrong with the spring side. The leg pressurizes fine but it doesn't actually get stiff- seems like the positive and negative springs are continually equalizing and thus offering no real resistance. Opened it up and didn't find anything obviously amiss though. Oddly, when I reassembled it, the fork seemed ok, in that it was soft, but was not displaying the same issue with positive-negative spring equalization until I put the pump on it and tried to really bring it up to pressure properly. Basically with just the air in the leg from assembly it was OK. Once I pressurized it a little, it actually gets softer, and stays there. Anyone?

didn't they have a "pass through" air chamber for a while on the earlier ones? Like you added from the top, but had to off-gas from the bottom?
