Double X and Double Xc interchangeable ???

Hi all...

Ok, so I'm gonna be building two bikes. Each having a 1.5" HT. One of them will have a Sherman Breakout Plus, and the other, I was thinking of butting a Manitou Stance Static on there for some Urban and DJ. So, one would have a CaneCreek Double X headset for the 1.5" steerer, and the other would have the CaneCreek Double Xc headset for the 1.125" steerer. Now, my question is, would I be able to just swap the forks from one frame to another without switching the headset cups ? Cuz, as far as I can tell, both headsets use the same cups. The only difference being the inner diameter of the races, but, the outer diameter is the same (I think). Cuz, if I feel like doing some DH on my hardtail, I'd like to slap my breakout plus on it without removing the headset cups all the time.

Cheers !

No they can't be the same. The headtubes are different sizes as are the steer tubes. So the inner diameter of the bearings will be different, the cups might have the same outer diameter bearings, but you don't want to pop out bearings unless they are not super tight and just come out by hand. Plus you will need a different stem or a shim of some sort.

Alright, so I feel kinda silly now...

I just read the manual for those headsets and, sure enough, what I thought was correct. The only difference between both headset are the inner diameter of the top caps, compression rings and crown races. So, they can be interchanged without any complications.

Bingo.

oldfart, sorry, you're wrong. The Cane Creek headsets use a compression ring in the top bearing and a very large crown race for the bottom bearing, and a different dust cap on top, to make it a 1 1/8" headset. Pick up the small parts kit from Cane Creek - smaller race, and larger dust cap - and you can run a 1.5 steerer fork in it.

Stems will be need to be different though...

Yes, obviously for stems...

I was just wondering cuz I'm gonna have 2 bikes. Both will have 1.5" headtubes, but only one will have a breakout plus in it. The other, I was considering getting a stance static when it becomes available over here. So, standard steerer. But, if I want to put my long travel fork for some hucking and whatnot on my hardtail, I can... so, it's all cool ! :)
