Sorry if this belongs in the Lounge, I just don't wander over there very often so I feel more comfortable here. Anyway, I just got a PS2 w/ DHD, I didn't spring for a memory card so every time I turn off the system I loose whatever I've already done. So last night during the presidential debate I got 2 solid hours in doing a MX careear on the lowest difficulty. I got to the 7th race (the second SLC race where you have to place 1st to win) and I kept getting smoked, like by 6-10 seconds. I've tried staying in second place the whole way down and there's some point where the rider in front of me just dissapears. Where does he go, and how can I catch up to him? I think there's a shortcut route somewhere around where there's a big hill followed by a sharp right that you'll crash easily on if you don't line up right. Any help? My wife got tired of watching me race the same course so many times. She even started cheering for me so that I'd win and turn it off.

i love that that course. there arent really any short cuts on it, the one thing to rememebr on that course is to not hit the jump button very often at all, just keep it on the ground and pedaling.

or i'll sell ya my memory card that has almost all the riders and bikes on it.

Yep, just keep it low and learn all the rythym sections.
Also, you can get smoked at the bottom if you run out of sprint thingies.
So do some tricks before you come down the homestretch.
That course is one of the sweetest in the game.
Dude, ya gotta get the memory card or it will drive you insane.
And when you think you are a total badazz at this game.
Race the CPU in best time mode. You basically race a blue dot
down the hill that will smoke you up like a blunt.

I don't remember the course specifically but I rocked the MX career in like 20 minutes.. I actually find that the best way to win was to stay on the jump button. If you can hit the trannies correctly, it really does give you a rediculous speed boost. Plus, staying on the jump button gives you time to whip out quick tricks and gives you both a pedalling boost and weapons upgrades. The key is lots of low jumps - don't get too high but make sure you get enough air to do tricks and get the pedal boosts.

You can easily win the MX courses without the weapons, but once you have the bottles just start chucking them anytime you can see a rider and doing tricks in between to keep them. It's a little cheap, though :D

Can you give a quick course description? I don't remember which one it is.. Is it the one with the big dirt piles/concrete walls/construction trucks at the end? Or the one with all the scaffolding sections? I seem to remember needing to place first in both of those.

edit: incidentally, AFAIK there are no serious shortcuts in any of the MX courses. There are some little corners you can cut and such, but nothing that will shave 6 seconds in one shot.

Well that would explain why I can't find any help on the cheat pages either. So I just have to learn to be fast hu. I finally got to where I can consistantly place second but Eric Carter usually smokes me, I'm not looking forward to having to do the 6 levels leading up to that one again just to get smoked some more. I guess I'll just have to pony up for a memory card some time. You'd think I could afford a $25 card

Ahh, that course rips.

The best thing to do in that course is to learn the layout of all the scaffolds and try to hit the transition sections of all of them at the correct angle, and as soon as you hit use your pedalling boost. You can get going retardedly fast on that course - I actually had a lot of trouble keeping my speed at a point where I wasn't overshooting everything and banging my head into the ceiling.

If its the salt lake city one then there is a huge short cut that you can take, but you need lots of practice to do it. on that one section with the ramp that goes down all the way around, Before the little jumps with the Go-ride banner thing, you can hip off the start of the ramp, it is sloped up a little, and land at the botom of the ramp. It saves alot of time.

Ok...here is a biggie. You need to go do the tricks tutorial first. It will show you how to do some retarded tricks really easily. Doing tricks all the way down the course gives you sprint to keep up and blow people away. Plus like the guy said, it gives you weapons upgrades. Carter can't do crap about a water bottle upside the noggin.

Most important places to "trick it" :
off the bleachers into the daylight
Into the tractor trailers
Up onto the hard right handed funnel

If you don't have a full sprint bar on those 3 sections, you will lose.

They all have really long straights afterwards.

Also, in the long straightaway dirt jump section with the left/right combo at the end of it, stay right and hit the far right take off ramp and transfer to the left side jump and into the turn.

Now, I must figure out what cord behind my TV unplugs the VCR, so I can plug mine back in and play tonight!!!!

I need to pick this game up, maybe it will give my PS2 a reason to exist besides being our spare DVD player.

My Xbox gets Halo 2 in a little over month, so it will still have some life in it.

I wish they made a downhill game for PC.

The mountain cross is defenitly the most fun type of race that you can do, and as everybody said before stay off the jump button, if you do use it take less speed into the jump, save the just big double right before the trailers. As soon as you can take all the jumps at the right speed, you will end up winning by a good margin. You also can unlock Brian Lopes if you beat Mtn cross in Hard mode....God that game was addicting.

First, tune your suspension and drivetrain. Then go for a ride. Now that you are all dialed, go build dirtjumps. After that, get old. Now retire from your job, and you will have all the time in the world to play video games becuase you wasted your younger year actually doing things.
