Its like Gremlins, except instead of water, they multiply with gravy.
One walks in Cracker Barrel, and five come out.

PS. I still feel sorry for the dude, his family, etc...

Not to further derail the thread, but are you fat? There's a little more to it than that. That's like looking at a really stupid person and saying "If you'd just applied yourself, you'd be smart right now." People can only play the cards dealt them to the best of their ability. Just because someone plays a hand badly doesn't mean they deserve death or cruel ridicule.

I do find it somewhat sad that people could care so little for a fellow human knowing no more about him than his dimensions. I laugh at anything and everything pretty easily, but if this was a real person and it really happened as described, it's a pretty sad thing. Now if he was a child molester or something, then I'd be all about him doing the lobby louganis.
You're absolutely right. This thread got a bit out of hand. We should at least be sorry for his family, but I still don't think that everyone who doesn't know him should be *sad* - death just isn't that sad. <shrug>

I still contend that the majority (stress *majority*) of fat people choose that path.

I blame Westy for bringing this thread down. :D

Log them into a spiral notebook? ;)

It's like running up the down escalator. I'm not really sure anymore that it is possible to impart moderation in moderation.

I bet it would be cool if there were 2 successive up escalators, and you did a stair gap on them.

I am very disappointed that fellow monkeys would talk bad about either the dead or soon-to-be-dead, that's extremely bad taste and I have come to expect more from some of you.

Anyway...Its sad...I'm sure the guy has friends and family, maybe even kids cared about him and that'll miss him.
that's very true, but LOTS of people die every day.

If you go around mourning each of 'em, you'll drive yourself crazy.

I'm not saying I'm mourning him...I just have to agree with reflux on this...it's not funny the guy died like that...and it's not cute that people think he had it coming cuz he was fat...I fear of meeting any of these people...god forbid I don't meet their standards of what is right and wrong.

You know...that's actually a pretty cool idea. Kinda like those people who boogie board forever in a wave pool. Something like that may be possible to find in a subway station. My riding skills would not enable me to do it, though. I would clip the bars on the landing and crumble into a heap of aluminum and intoxicated idiot. The closest I ever got to it was riding my BMX up and down the escalators in Springfield Mall early on a Saturday morning before it opened...by sneaking in a custodial entrance.

The issue really isn't about mourning each and every dead person, the issue is more about respecting fellow human beings enough to not make comments in poor taste about their demise (or almost demise).

Meh. This is one of those things where some people will feel sad, and some people will make jokes, and neither side will make the other side see any different. The jokes will be made regardless of Echo's decision to moderate them, or anyone's expression of disgust, so if you don't like them, close the thread and resign yourself to the fact that some people aren't as sensitive to this stuff.

We're not "talking bad" about him. We're making light of the situation. There's a difference........

This quote seems to explain this thread pretty well.

No, it's not funny that he died. But it's also not unreasonable to point out that he most likely contributed to his own death

well said.

Thing is tho, not everyone is insulting the guy. Everyone dies, but not everyone goes out in some (bizarre?) form of glory.

I mean, this is movie stuff and while sad, also pretty cool.

I see your point somewhat, but a child running after a ball into the middle of a busy intersection has done the same...but few would find humor in his demise.

Sure he did...but if he were a mtn biker who died in a freak accident it'd be...ride on brother...you're in a better place...and damn it!!! I'm having trouble coming to terms with this...your ass would be jumped by a bunch of people on this board saying what a prick you were if you say well...he pretty much contributed to it...he had it coming to him.

Hey, no argument here. He certainly went out in a spectacular fashion that will be talked about for years. Every new employee into the office building is going to hear, "Hey, did you hear about the guy who..."

I'm sure it's of little consolation to the family etc., but hey, better to be remembered by all for the bizarre fashion of your death than to have been forgotten completely.

I don't find humor in either situation, but I would argue the child is a little less "wise" about the consequences of his/her actions.

Man, this place is hard to understand sometimes. The Pope dies and everyone has fun making jokes about it, then some fat guy dies and people take offense to the jokes.

(Note to self: Important religion figure dies, jokes are ok...random fat guy dies, tragedy)
