I'm running a 1x8 drivetrain right now with just a bashgaurd, no chainguide. Can I help prevent the chain from dropping to some extent by taking additional links out of my chain? What are the cons of doing this?
Is it dropping due to your derailleur bouncing around or while pedalling at either end of your cassette?
I used to run a 1x7 (42x12-21) on my commuter back in the day and dropped the chain while pedalling at either end of the cassette. I added a Kore Chain Reactor inverted so that it pulled the top chain down instead of the bottom part up.

Dropping off the chainring in the front. I'm probably bringing this bike to the Kingdom this weekend and don't have time to get a chain tensioner, just wondered if removing some links might help the issue a little. Not that the trails up there are all that gnarly...
Run the chaim as short as you can get away with, this will optimize you chain tension and help with the chain dropping issue.
If you still have issues after that, a changuide is the only answer.
I'm not sure the Jump Stop would do the trick in this case, only keeps chain from dropping to the inside. It sounds like he may losing the chain do to the chain bouncing of the ring on rough terrian.
Now the front derailer should work and is good idea....
Thanks y'all! Chain is dropping off to the inside of the chainring, the bash keeps it from dropping to the outside. I don't have a front der., or I'd try that.
What I should do is convert it back to a SS like it used to be and suck it up this weekend! I only put gears on it for the 24-hour race I did a couple weekends ago.

I don't follow. The jump stop would work just the same as a front derailer. If the chain is coming off in the rough stuff, it is mostly likely jumping off on the bottom first, and a derailer or jump stop will both keep it on on the top.
I've often had the chain drop to the outside when running a single ring and no chainguide, the jump stop would do nothing for this. Maybe I'm missing something about the jump stop.
Appearently he is is running a bash gaurd and is dropping the chain to inside. In this case, your right, the jump stop would be the ticket.
