I can drop to flat all day long but I dont have the technique down for dropping to tranny. I ususally land & feel like I am gonna loop out. I know I am used to trying to land on my rear wheel & that it is TOO natural now. How do you guys hit drops to trannies?

a) stop dropping to flat :D
b) match the transition

step 1) if you're "wheelie dropping" STOP. STOP NOW. It's worthless.

step 2) just don't pull up as much on the front end as you come off the drop. In fact, at speed, you should hardly pull up at all to drop to tranny.

IMO, you have to be comfortable landing a little rear heavy, a little front heavy, or dead even. You'll just have to learn to shift your weight forward off the lips so you land more evenly. And for the record, I'd wager that drops to trannies are much easier once you get used to them. You just have to be more used to the additional boost of speed once you land, whereas with drops to flat slow you down much more, which is comfortable, but actually harder on the bike, the rider, and harder to go big. Good luck leaning forward. Don't lean too far ;)

I've gotta disagree with some of this advice.

1. Keep the wheelie drop skills sharp. Nothing is better when dropping off of things at low speed and you need to get to front end up. They're alos good when dropping to an imperfect or nonexistant tranny, but you knew that already. Keeps the options open, I've never bitched about a ****ty tranny, 'cause my wheelie drop skills were kept sharp.

2. Don't stop doing drops to flat. If you like them do them. Lots of people don't, but when this freeriding thing took over they were the move to have. Still are if you like things tech and slow (just look at the early shore trails compared to current ones like Air Supply-drops to flat aren't cool anymore) If you can do them and not break **** than you're going to be alot smoother than someone who spend their time falling to perfect trannys all the time.

The "match the tranny" advice is perfect though. The tranny is what lets you get away with this instead of breaking up the force of impact like a rear wheel first landing. You likely need to get used to having more speed off of drops, this will allow you to drop without wheelie dropping.

My first two points will help you avoid asking any of those stupid "How big a bike do I need to drop ___ feet?" Answer: It depends! (Just look at what trials guys can drop with no suspension.

As long as your body's mass is centered over the center of gravity on the bike, you will not fall forward or loop out. Once you get balanced in the air, you just put the bike in the right angle for the transition... start small, work your way up, it becomes second nature.

i find drops to tranny easiest if i pull a suicide no hander off of it thereby allowing the front end to drop quicker.

Toshi- you have a twin (almost)..... as long as tashi doesn't use the cow dog.....

For tranny drops just use your weight to match the tranny, lean forward, back, side, etc., and go fast- don't try to flop onto the tranny like a wheelie drop to flat. Wheelie drops have thier place, but tranny drops are better at high speed (fast enough to land well down the tranny).

Stand up straight on the bike as you come off the lip. In the air, keep your arms and legs locked and stiff. Yell 'Fronj.' When you feel the bike hit the transition, allow your limbs to go limp. Your chin hitting your stem will transfer your body's momentum to the bike and your suspension will take care of the rest. Look around and ask if anyone got it on video so you can see how cool you are. If someone did, say 'word, brah.' If they missed it, call them 'gay.'

Why do you think Bender always falls? He goes so damn slow that he bounces up and flips forward.

I just got myself in the past month or so to try drops to trannies, and even then they aren't big ones. Same thing that you're feeling I think? I was afraid of the looping out part, and I think the speed intimidated me. I found myself not pullin up as much for trannie drops, and I shift my weight towards the back alot more. If you feel like you're looping out, one of my friends always does drops but he's almost got his bars to his chest. Even when there's a tranny. He told me that he taps the rear brake so when he hits the ground, it doesn't let him loop out.

I guess it's all about what you're comfortable with doing?

Okay here's another way of looking at it... and this is kind of how I do the big GLC drop at Whistler, probably works better for long tranny's and higher speeds:

As I approach the edge of the drop I pull a little manual (not pulling up too hard) and then pre-jump the edge, pushing the nose forward and down trying to match the attitude of the bike with the down slope. I suppose it's a little like pre-jumping and trying to stay low on a table. Could be seen as a very racer-like way of doing it.

For shorter tranny's I try to take off flat (so again don't pull up too hard) and then tuck my legs up and push arms forward and down to adjust the attitude of the bike to match the tranny, as long as it's close it'll feel pretty smooth.

Jon.
