Well, I finally got a DH/FR guide on the FLY. The Heim guide worked well but the DRS and the XT shortcage rock. I am running a 22/32 set up for now but plan on changing to a 22/36. I still lose the chain once in a great while but I still need to take a few links out of the chain but Im waiting on the 36T chainring.

Does anyone else run a 22/36 with a DRS on a FLY?

So with a week of riding on the DRS, I am dropping the chain down to the granny a lot. I can't turn the guide up anymore as it is almost touching the chainstay. The only thing I can see to do is file the guide a little to move it up a little more closer to the chainstay to tensioin the chain a little more. Any other ideas? I have a 36T coming that will replace the 32T so I should be able to tension the chain a little more. Will the 36T solve the problem or do I need to file the guide a little and move it up?

Here's a pic. I am thinking of using a file to remove 1/4 inch and turn the guide a little more.

When is the chain dropping? JRA, or just when it's getting thrown around?

If you have the adjustment... Ya may want to try moving the Fr Der. down a little, it might get it in a better position to prevent the chain dropping as much.

As far as I can tell the setup looks pretty good though, tensioning the chain a little more is about the only thing left.

Its dropping only on the DH rough sections. It works great every where else. I posted a few more pics. Ill try the 36T first. That should help the tension a little more. If not I will try getting the file out and moving the guide up a little more.

If I drop the derailer anymore the chain will fall off onto the BB.

Wouldn't chopping your chain have the same effect as increasing your chainring size...? Maybe your chain's just too long.

That could be it..... What about the shortcage derailer?

Heres a pic in big front ring and big rear ring. I guess I could take out another link hu?

Oh, yeah, I have my derailleur almost flat when it's in the big/big...def. lose a link or maybe two.

Edit: Forget that, actually, if you've got a 36t coming in anyhow. No need to drop links then add them right back. Just re-check your chain with the 36t and adjust from there. Still might have to drop a link...or heck, even add one...

32-36t is 2 links should be perfect. When setting your chain length don't forget what your suspension does, although you probably don't have alot of growth on that bike.

Hey Kanter,

Just saw this post. I am heading out the door right now, and I am pretty sure that Jonas and Michael are out riding right now. Ill be back in a few hours and I will give you some info then. Should have no drops at all really, we have a lot of guys riding Flys out there with DRS guides and we get a lot of really good feedback.

Can you post a couple pictures of the guide viewing in line with the chain for me? That will help a lot.

How many alignment plates are you using? What BB spindle are you using? Are you using any spacers beind the BB or DRS back plate?

Thanks!

Dave

I've been running a 36/24 DRS on my Fly for 2 years, with miniaml chain drop issues. It occasionally dropped when shifting into granny with the suspension dipped...aka loose chain, also a few times on large drops. I am so happy with the setup that I'm kicking the Fly frame to the curb today and subbing in a vp-free!

I run a drs on my banshee sceam it's possible on a down bounce with a pop up (bounce) to pinch the chain between the wear plate and the chain stay... you know what that would spell, rite?... fortunately I found this out in the street infront of my apt bldg instead of on the trail... so I trimed my wear plates down w/an exacto and a bench wire-wheel... it's possible to trim the wear plates so that your chain will clear the chain stays and guide and still function optimally... b.t.w. I run a 104 40 & 26 in front and a 11-30 med cage in the back... I hope this helps

Hey Kanter,

Please keep us updated after you make your calls. I have the MRP and it hasn't dropped a chain once at N* or heavy trail riding, but I am always in the market for a new toy for my Fly. Thanks.
