Thank God.

I thought this thread was going to be about you moving to the US.

What are you doing stealing our women, though?

As most of you know, my wife is of the yankee persuasion. apprently next year she could apply for canuckianship. But the US being what it is, it sorta sounds like if she applies, she would lose her american.

Is that what it sounds like to you?
Plenty of the dually people in Warshinton. Don't brag about it and pick a nationality (Canadian) when traveling across the border and all is well.

Sure there are..... but it all depends how you do it. If you're canadian and become american or you're american and become canadian... very different animals....

My kids are dual, because they my spawn. (one born in US, the other here). BUt that link says:

However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.
It's the last little bit.....she does not want to give up her US....

It is the last phrase, with the intention, that leads me to believe she would be okay. As long as she dosn't intend to not become and American she can become a Canadian too.

Remember kids, Ummbikes is just engaging in wild speculation. Consult some one who knows shat from shinola before modifying your citizenship status.

Reading between the lines I'd say it means in your wifes case (original citizenship American) dual citizenship is illegal but we aren't going to hassle you about it if you acquire another country's citizenship as long as you be discreet.

In most countries, it must be gained through birth, by and large and the USA in particular will make you forfit your citizenship if you try to gain another one. I don't think you can become a dually in the way you are trying.... whats wrong with being a permanent resident?

I have a number of friends who have gotten citizenship in EU countries through grandparents who were born there without having to renounce their US citizenship. They do it so that they can work in Europe (musicians) without having to deal with visas, or compete for work as people from outside the EU. Slightly different situation, but it seems to work pretty well for them.

Also, I've heard murmuring from them that the situation might be different with Canada so I'm not really sure. Seems to work with Europe though.

As a Cannuk, you can pick up a US citizenship and pretty much just keep your Canadian one on the sly, renew your Canadian passport every so often and be cool. Canada won't recognize the US's requirement to renounce your Canadian citizenship (from the Canadian Consulate General's office in MN).
However, going the other way is an unknown to me. I guess the worse case is she can reapply for a US one afterwards and be on the same page you are now. But that might throw up some flags somewhere...Homeland Security or INS?

In my experience, the people who are supposed to know all this stuff are idiots. When I was getting my US passport a couple of years back, it came up that I had previously held a Canadian passport (born in Montreal, parents are American), and I was told in that tone of false authority that it was a "potentially expatriating act." And that I should call on Monday to see what happened. So the whole weekend I'm thinking I'll either get my passport, or get kicked out of the country. Great.
Turns out she's full of crap. My dad became a naturalized Canadian dual-citizen some time back, it's not really the big deal the US tries to make of it.

Yep.... my wife is quite the rock star at sifting through paperwork. She was an escrow officer for a while in WA... She did all of my green card paper work and all of her immigration paperwork here in Canada all by herself....and she got it right the first try both times. The info is always there. It's just a matter of reading it.

Haven't you heard about all our immigration problems? Your wife decided she hates freedom when she married you. We don't want her.

Actually maybe we do. Post some pics.

You can phone the INS or USCIS or whatever they are called now with the same question, ask three people, and you'll probably get three totally different answers.
