Dumb Shiver DC question...

Hey guys,

I have a 2002 Shiver DC. I decided to change to heavier springs as I found that it wasn't progressive enough and it didn't have enough oil. Long story short the person who owned it before me had light springs in. When I got the fork he put the stock ones back in but the oil height was low (he was a light one), so now I got heavy springs and oil set to correct 80mm below. As it sits right now I'm in heaven as far as the feel goes :)

But my "dumb shiver question" is when you back off all the preload are you assured that there really is no preload? Like.......there's there silver nuts on the inside of the top cap that hold it in place. When you back off all preload, shouldn't those silver nuts be right up against the top of the top cap? I always get confused when reassembling this and always put the silver nuts half way in the top cap and then tighten down. I've never had any problems with this but just curious. Just wanting to make sure I didn't pre-preload my springs to find out when you adjust all preload off they are still pre-loaded.

Some help on this would be great!

when you reassemble it, you just need to scew on the preload caps just enough so that you can get the C-clip in there, when it's like this you have basically no preload.

It doesn't matter what position the cap is in though when you assemble the fork, if you turn the adjuster all the way one way, you'll get no preload, all the way the other way, and you'll get all the preload. By putting it in with them about "halfway" down, your preload is at "half", and you can either back it off or increase it to the limits.

Just wanting to make sure I didn't pre-preload my springs to find out when you adjust all preload off they are still pre-loaded.
Nope, when you adjust all the preload off in that situation, they will not be preloaded anymore.

BTW. There are no stupid questions, just boxxer owners.

dude, i know exactly what you are saying.
I just got my 01 Shiver yesterday{tried it out today} & added oil to 80mm below before riding it ..
I am bottoming out on the BIG drop but is killer everywhere else !
Should i get Heavy springs..i weigh 190#. i guess i may have to aye?
When i re-assembled mine i preloaded my springs pretty far while still apart, to where they were not loose at all & Then scrwed on the top cap..I don't know what happens though after that because it's beyond my thinking.I know they are backwards threaded So i guess it actually loosens the preload as you screw the top caps on ??

As long as it doesn't top out or rattle i don't think i would worry i guess.

really ,ok i'll go 75mm.
thanks..
if you are still bottoming at 75mm, go to heavier springs.

and it's always worth mentioning that oil level is measured with the springs and spacers out, fork compressed, and the damper rods pushed in all the way (as opposed to sticking out, but they shouldn't be "sticking out")

Ok, BTW I weight upwards of 240 with gear. I have heavy springs and the oil filled right. Feels fine to me, atleast for the parking lot test. The trail will tell the truth.

Thanks JM, I just wanted to make sure as I know what BigKonaRider is talking about. How they are reverse threaded so when you think you are tightening the nut you are really loosening the preload. I guess you are right thought that it doesn't matter as long as those nuts are in the top cap. Once all preload is off then all preload is off (if that's the case it feels great with no preload and correct oil height)
