OK...jsut thought of this conspiracy theory! What if the gearbox on Minnar's bike contains a "inertia wheel". Stick with me here. If you've ever ridden a Schwinn Spinner, you know what I mean. Once it gets rolling...it will roll by itself for 10 minutes.

What if inside there, the rear wheel is attached to some sort of "inertia wheel" that spins on some sort of freehub when he's not pedaling...but engages the rear wheel when he pedals? Not a fully FIXED hub like on a spinner...but one that clutches off when the cranks don't turn.

Essentially, the inertia wheel gets cranked up by his first few pedal cranks and then freehubs inside while the pedals aren't turning. When the pedals turn forward again, it clutches the inertia wheel into action and powers the chain and rear hub.

Each time the rider goes to torque on the pedals, the inertia wheel engages and makes the bike snap forward like it's got an engine.

Wouldn't this be a FANTASTIC explanation for Honda's R & D of the gearbox. It would make a motorcycle gets 80-85 miles to the gallon, or a bicycle pedal like nothing. >:D
your ideas and suggestions intrigue me, i would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Well, if that is NOT what honda did, then you just ruined your chances, I would patent it real quick before one of the other monkeys do! :)

He did have the bike all taped and wrapped up in practice, with some sort of 4 button box mounted on the top tube. Dunno what's so secret when everything already inside a housing? Probably just protection for a data aqusition unit but still makes ya wonder.

Of course if you try to follow him in practice you understand it's still about 90% rider and 10% kick as bike and support.

They have a data aquisition bike he uses for one or 2 runs a race. This telemetry is sent back to Japan and suspension/gear settings are emailed back overnight.

a agree with ssadict that it was the slickest |" hardpack" i have ever road.
the only crash i had was a 30mph front wheel washout on the first fast right.
carving one minute, face full of moon dust the next. i would like to thank BIB for the comp 32. that made the dust much easyer. also thanks to manitou my breakout pluss was so sticky i could only ride 1/2 a run till my hads were numb. lance gave me new lowers, new damper bushings and did some trick drills and my fork was 110% better.

GO sanjay! nice run man!

Our little BCD reunion was great! It was so nice to actually talk to you in person, never thought I'd be doing it waiting to race with you.

i would tease my frend about a bike like that i thought of making.

so you sit in the gate waiting to start. you disingage a clutch and start cranking your flywheel 5-4-3-2-1- GO. whizzzzzzz - click snap out of the gate! you could also spin it up by using it as a brake then pop it coming out of the turn. might surprize you what a 5 lbs wheel could do for you.

Over your shoulder whispering
wait...isn't this just basicly how a moped engine works?

What would stop a company like Honda from using that type of technology in this bike? I mean...NORBA would never know b/c what official would ever be able to figure it out?

Wouldn't that have an effect on the handling of the bike? That inertia wheel I assume is known as a flywheel, but the rotational inertia of the flywheel could create a lot of torque on the bike making it difficult to steer. Take a heavy DH bike wheel, hold it by the QR spin as fast as you can, try to twist it, you can feel the torque. Now if want to store a significant amount of energy in that flywheel, it would have to be heavy, or rotate very fast, or both. The faster and more massive the wheel, the more torque. There's an equation if I can find it. DW needs to chime in.

holy crap. now THAT is a not so racey race course obstacle. How many of the pro men were hitting it like wentz?

Edit to say that that woulda taken me quite a few runs to nut up to and actually hit. wow.

This shot isn't all that good, but it does show Wentz LAUNCHING the drop
fvck.

EDIT: I had a little dinner style with the B-Town crew (Myklak, Fisher, et alia) and Swentz came in a little later on, and he told me the only thing he felt would be proper wound be to "throw it down bigger than Vories" or something to that effect.

Damn. Holy crap. Wow.

I talked to Mean Gene Hamilton at overall awards Sunday afternoon and he said that Swentz hitting that drop was the absolute coolest/raddest/best thing he'd ever seen done on a mountain bike. Ever.

I am a true believer.

The majority were hitting it like this:

Most of the top level pros were hitting it fast but nowhere near as big as Wentz

FT- I was standing with Gene up on the mountain and he was going crazy, he saw Wentz going back up the lift and just yelled "That was the coolest f-n thing I have ever seen!" Wentz won the crowd although Minnar won the race.

please tell me you're trying to sell that to the major magazines!!! That shot would be the COOLEST COVER OF DIRT EVER!!!!
Which shot are you talking about? Honestly none of these are going anywhere. It is the ones you DON'T see that get sent out :)

Alex, I assume they are using a wide angle lens or a fisheye, kinda like this shot.

I was eyeing up a location in the trees but there were to many branches for me.

when you PSed this together were they in the first frame?
it just seemed like they are all shooting the wrong way/place.

i am just saying i like non-fish profile shots. they show the event, not the rider.

Yeah, that is one shot with the second part to the jump just dropped in. I bet if you look close you may be able to see the lines because I didn't really do a good job. :)

Yeah, I like the long glass shots too, though the fisheye shot is safer. Not everyone is going to boost the jump and make that shot look good. But the fisheye makes everything look cool :)

Ground Control to Major Tom, we’ve got 12+ feet of vert for your hucking pleasure. Please extinguish all smoking materials, fasten your seatbelts, and prepare the cabin for departure. Neal Giska makes more like Neal Armstrong off the 3rd drop, righteously dubbed "pink panties".
