E13/DW: Smaller Crown Chainwheel?

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I'm interested to know if there are plans for a smaller E13 crown chainwheel.

It would be very cool to see a miniature crown chainwheel/bash setup for compact drivetrains. There are small chainwheels on the market, however there are none (that I've found) which also allow a full-circle bash guard, which mountain bikers have grown fond of for crash/shoelace/pant grease safety.

If this is a dumb idea, flame away.

There are currently several riders testing out such a device for e13. Its a custom 27 tooth ring and chainguide. Very compact and clean. The riders that I currently know of that have them are Aaron Chase, Seth Lolli, Dave Smutok, and Kyle Ebbet there might be more, im not sure.
Here is a picture from one of HCOR interbike galleries.

if that set-up is introduced, i hope the ti chainring is dropped for an alu version to keep price somewhat reasonable.

--edit--

ok, i can't find the thread where it said that CR was ti. so i can't back up my statement.

But what would you run in the rear with such a small chainwheel? It'd be pretty low geared without something like the compact stuff that the BMXers run. 27Tx16T/15T would be way too slow. Or - what gear ratios are other urban riders running?
Are there 135mm rear hubs that work with those mini drivers?

Everyone that has them has a super small road cassette like a 12-23 or something. It seems to work out.

Ti would be awesome for keeping the chainring from wearing out so quickly. Smaller ring = more wear on each tooth. Stainless steel ring could be cool too (Surly makes some).

The price of Ti scares me, of course.

Id love to see what a 7075 compact ring would do. I still have yet to see a single e.13 G ring that has been worn out. Thats pretty impressive knowing how much some of the people running these things ride their bikes. I think it would be fine for this purpose. Light too.

I agree - and how many chainrings would the average rider wear out in a year? I don't think very many, especially if they are DH/FR/park riders. Breaking/bending 'em is one thing, but wearing out the teeth is a different matter.

Have you heard of any XC SSers running the G-Rings? That's where tooth wear really happens: high-mileage / high-torque singlespeeding.

My friend was running a G-ring with his Rohloff set-up and it sure looked nice to me! I'm running a crown ring on my Profiles myself, and a Blackspire Super Pro on my 2-chainring set-up.

I'd love to see E.13 do ramped/pinned rings for Front Derailleur/XC applications. There are a lot of players in that market, but most of them make crap: rings that either break or don't shift well.

fun stuff.

I know alot of people that ran their dh bikes from april until november riding them basically every weekend for many downhill runs and even using the dh bikes quite often for trail rides. I personally rode my dh bike a ton this year, mostly in ridiculously muddy conditions. I went through a ton of drivechain parts including atleast 4 or 5 chains and 2 cassettes. When ever I put the new chain on I checked out the chainring for wear and never saw a thing. Id clean off the old grease and build-up and it would look as good as new. I was impressed. I know of a few people who said they were going to run the rings for single speed use and havent heard back from them at all (hopefully thats a good sign) I think alot of people who want a 2:1 ratio for single speeding will go with a 32 : 16 or something of that nature instead of running a 36t G ring. Ramped/ Pined rings would be cool to see.

Currently, e.thirteen components has the following Formula Program riders testing the performance of our PROTOTYPE SST guides.

Eric Porter
George Ryan
Dave Smutok
Kyle Ebbett
Chris Donahue
Aaron Chase
Seth Lolli
Jeff Lenosky

Their verdict = P.I.M.P.

We have a list of pro riders who want their hands on em as well.

Production rings will NOT be Ti.
