I'm preparing some proposals and stuff, and as part of my write up is "our" average (or mean) annual income as downhiller riders/racers. I'm weighing in more on the gravity crowd for my basis since the XC crowd, in general, have a more higher income level than "us." That's mainly due to the age distribution between general/xc riders and dh/fr/etc riders. Groms vs grown ups :p. Further, we're all just cheap, broke bastards.

So without asking you to disclose your income level, what do you think is the average income (earning) for a stereotypical (that's a relative term) dh/fr/gravity racer/enthusiast/poser/hucker/erbon rider?

If you're 16 yrs old and/or jobless, you do not apply. Thanks!

Shouldn't you include in this poll how much one spends on cycling related gear. On paper I make enough to buy a new bike every season, but factor in the exhorbant prices I pay for rent, gasoline, insurance and all that and you'll see that someone with my slary living in this part of the country doesn't necissarily have money to throw around, as would be the case for most of us.

I think stopping at 50k + is a little low, don't you? Here In SoCal, 50k isn't much, and there's definitely a difference in expendable income between $50k and $100k per year.

True. I would be on the bottom of the list, but cost of living here is so cheap I can afford a new pair of shoes every other year. :nopity:

Good poll...I just wish we could get the real demographic, not just the E-demographic.

I'm trying to do the same thing...
See if you can put together a questionaire that would take into account all the factors you need. Possibly post a link to it or work with RM on it or something.

I'm just quantifying the base..grossing it out. When you net the earnings, it doesn't look too promising. I'm using the "base" just as an indicator of how strong or weak our market is. Granted it's just a generalization (e-bikers and such demographics), it atleast gives me a good (albeit, narrow) idea. Thanks all for responding.

Oh and I'm broke.. :p

Up your way, the cost of living is pretty high and is reflected in the salaries, is it not? Come on now, you guys do ok up there in Norcal. Besides, I quit a couple of my side gigs to have more free time, so I'm basically cutting my own earnings by about $1200 a month. It bites into the bike fund a bit, but it's well worth it.

Depends who you ask I guess...I'm sure some people make bank, I'm sure not one of them. There is a reason why I had to live out of my truck the first two years I moved here!! :(

If I was living the kind of life some are (ie. always dressed up to the latest fashion, up to date on all the new gadgets, going out all the time, etc..) I couldn't afford to bike. Also the fact that I’m paying a good lump in Child support doesn’t help…

Of course you'll probably find there are some lurking variables in this poll. For instance, many of us are salried professionals who have internet access through out the day and post on ridemonkey during work hours. I know guys who ride just as much or more than me but don't aren't ebikers because they don't work near computers.

funny... I was homeless (figuratively and literally) for a month in NorCal. I slept in my truck's backseat on the side of the road by the main entrance at China Camp. Those were some weird days but got tons of riding though sleeping right next to the trailhead.

I have so many stories I could tell you about sleeping in some ghetto neigorhoods - but after a while you know which ones are safe and which ones to avoid!! ;)

I also got lots of riding in - that and quite a few road trips! Those were my XC racing days ;) Kept all my belonging in a local storage room (which I still have).

It was just strange not having a "home" to go to - also having your work address on your drivers license is just strange! ;)

Yeah, been there, done that for a while myself. I used to park at Top of the World in Laguna and sleep in my car, then drive down to the beach to shower before work. I'm a good long way from that now, but it sure helps me appreciate having the ability to pay for a roof over my head and bikes and toys and stuff, and of course first off, the child support and private school tuition (even though I share custody.)

I know another monkey here that could share some "homeless" stories with us. ;)

I was lucky to have a shower here at work - plus the building here is accessible 24h a day, so that helped a lot when I had to take showers. :thumb:

Well average household income is right around $60k for OC, but in Coto it's $145k, and in Santa Ana it's a lot less. I'm actually surprised it's that low around here...I didn't realize I was doing so well. Damn, I guess there are a lot of wannabe poser kind of people leveraged to the hilt.

Here in Oklahoma 50k is a reasonable salary but there are no places to ride DH. That means a lot of travel on top of the equipment costs. It is a tradeoff I guess...

I could not afford my stable of bikes if I lived someplace I could ride DH every day and made what I make here. The sad thing is that I don't think the salaries are commiserate with the cost of living.

I'm also pretty stoked to have a roof over my head now...but the best part about where I live now is that I have A GARAGE!! When I’m not at work or riding, that is where I spent all the rest of my time. I still live relatively simple – heck I don’t own a TV, never had Cable television in my life and don’t have a bed (well now I have an inflatable mattress – Thanks to Joe Pozer for convincing me to get one ;)

and honestly I'm happy with my life right now...not rich, not poor, just comfortable. I just with I had more time – the extra hours required from me here at work are killing me, and this just so I can KEEP my job!

When I was at Whistler this summer I was chatting with a few locals when riding up on the lift – a few times work came on the subject. They had a hard time believing me when I was telling them how many hours I worked a week, but was only paid for 40. They couldn’t comprehend that that had to be done just to keep your job – they were like “fok that, I would of quit a long time ago…”

Even to this day my parent don’t understand the work culture here..

For California that is like saying:

Dirt poor - pretty poor
Pretty poor - fairly poor
Fairly poor - Poor
Poor - Semi Poor
Semi Poor - Trump

Also remember that that factors in people that have lived here for YEARS and got houses before prices went through the roof.
The average income of someone that is young and can afford to buy a house has to be 2-3x the county or city average.
