I don't know about the different colors, but I have a pair in my front magura louise fr's and they work a helluva lot better than the crappy stock pads.
Get red for any downhill aplication. I've read the Gold should not be used for downhill, I remember exactly why...overheat? too harsh on the rotor? I've used the red ones and thought they performed well on a downhill bike.
On-On Stonz
90% of the EBC users I know (most everyone I know with disc brakes uses EBC to replace the stock pads in both Hope and Hayes systems) find that green pads are the best for every application.
Better than any stocks or the other EBC colors for sure. Golds squeal and don't give you any additional power, reds overheat and disintigrate without any appreciable increase in braking power...they just seem to lock up a bit sooner.
Maybe in the days of 6" rotor, semi-mechanical discs the reds were a big help, but with a modern 8" brake, you need something that's gonna last you more than one run.

I've got Hayes mags and have tried all the EBC pads. Golds are far and away the best. Like you said, reds just wear quickly with not much power (in fact, they're absolutely shocking), greens have no more power but don't wear as quickly, whereas golds seem to have a lot more bite and are said to last longer (I don't know, I've only had a few days on them so far). Hayes, Shimano and Hope systems all spec sintered pads as stock in some way or another (might only be with 8" rotors or something, I dunno) so the golds are basically cheaper "stock" pads. I'd recommend them over Reds and Greens for sure. Greens seem to overheat and glaze over very easily IME.
