Has anyone here used regular Eggbeaters for DH/Freeride use? Not the Mallets or the Candy. What kind of results have you had? Can they handle drops??
Thanks

You ever tried to drive a car with your feet.
Or carve a turkey with a butterknife.
If you use those pedals for real DH, you feet will come flying off
"Lord of the Dance" style. Get Mallets or Times or something else that
makes sense.
I think that if they get hit the beat part gets bent, and then they dont work at all or well. That is just what i heard. I used to use the cheap shimano flats.

When you slam them hard on rocks, the spindles will bend
I wasn't even DHing when this happened.
They can handle drops fine, but what I did was I hit a rock with the end of the pedal, my XT hollows (now removed) handled the impact just fine, but the spindle on the pedal was what gave.

I've been riding with the Shimano clipless with the platforms for 1.5 years now and the few times i've been bounced out or voluntarily unclipped my foot has ended up floating all over the platform. Whereas on my cross bike which has eggbeaters, if i unclip the arch of my shoe will rest securely on the clip way better than the platforms. Basically the platforms on the shimanos have been pointless. The only other concern I have is on bigger drops the platform MIGHT give added ankle support since the platform gives added leverage to the back of the foot. So before I swap out the the eggbeaters I thought I'd see if anyone here has had any luck doing the same.
"Imagine un clipping around a slippery corner and then what you've got to stand on if you don't get back in immediately."
This is my point exactly. The Specialized shoes actually have a recess in the arch which the eggbeater will sit in securely. But when I ride with the Shimanos my foot floats. So maybe it's just the shoes I'm using.
I only cry when I'm jthinking of you trying to fix my cassette at Whistler.

This is why I'm reluctant to swap out the pair from my cross bike. But I would guess that the same thing would happen to the Mallets since the platform doesn't actually add strenght. Screw it I guess the only way to find out would be to give it a shot. I'll let you know if I kidwoo my ankle.

Sometimes you just need muscle. I needed more than I had of course. Lock our your biggest cog or I'll give you a reason to cry boy!!!!
Go ride your eggbeaters and see what you think. Make a point of kicking bums around the mission and see how getting back in is affected by slipping on urine and the like.

I got your e-mail yesterday at Crank Brothers asking about this question on the thread. I personally wouldn't use the egg beaters for dh because it doesn't have a platform and that the pedal wings are exposed to being bent by rocks. I wouldn't use the candies for DH because of the plastic bodies but they do make a great trail/cyclocross pedal. Stick with the Mallet M for weight savings. If you are interested in a set PM me. Maybe we can work out a trade
