All of the music and movies that I had loaded onto my iPod Touch are gone. I had about 2,000 songs and a dozen movies. All gone. What the hell?

I plug my Touch into four different devices:

1) Desktop computer at home that has all the music (iTunes)
2) Laptop at home that has all the movies (iTunes)
3) iHome radio at work that just plays the music
4) Monitor at work for recharging

I use a usb cable for the desktop, laptop and monitor.

I was at work Saturday and the music was there. The Touch was plugged into the iHome, then I plugged it into the monitor to charge, then yesterday I had the Touch plugged into the laptop. Somewhere in there all of the music and movies got wiped out. I just plugged it into the iHome to discover this.

FYI, it's a 32G Touch and is about two weeks old. This ever happen to anyone else?

Unfortunately, you probably (accidentally) told it to sync with the work computer where all of your stuff isn't stored. Is iTunes on your work computer?

I don't like the iTunes sync process. I live with it because it's a small inconvenience compared to the rest of the good things about the phone. But the sync process sucks: in an effort to stop people from using the device to move files to a friend's computer or whatever, if you hit the sync button and the source files aren't on that computer you're syncing with, it wipes out the contents of the player - "syncing" it with an empty set of files.

All I do is plug the usb cable into the work monitor though. I don't use the Touch while it's plugged in there. I just let it sit there and charge. I've done that at work every day for the past week and didn't do anything differently Saturday. iTunes is not on my work computer, btw.

I thought maybe I accidentally synched it with the laptop at home. The laptop has iTunes with movies. However, I would think that if I accidentally synched with the laptop, it'd wipe the songs off the Touch but leave the movies intact.

Don't know... the sync works on playlists so if you don't have any playlists selected and do a sync, it'll remove all of your media. Or, if the media is moved on the hard drive, it'll remove it.

But if it's all set up properly (such that a normal sync copies files over), then maybe your iPod just sucks at life.

Well the iTunes on the laptop doesn't have playlists...just a list of movies. I suppose it's possible that I accidentally synched everything when I added Young Frankenstein saturday night. They should build these things to prevent human error. Maybe there's an app for that.

Well I got home from work, plugged the iPod into the desktop, and after a couple of minutes everything appeared back on the iPod. I didn't do a thing except plug it in. I dunno.

Updating iPod software now. I figure that's gotta help. Neither the desktop nor laptop recognized the Touch until I upgraded iTunes on each machine.
