I'm with @HAB on that one, I've got enough gouges and dents in BB shells to attest to that. I think over the years you heavily adapt to having more clearance on the non-drive side and cut that side closer to rocks, or at least I have.

I'm also not into having shit hanging down below the BB to smash/get hung up on stuff.
biggest dent on my bike is a hair above the downtube/bb junction. i hear rocks smashing and pinging away down there often enough that i'm damn sure i don't want any sensitive dangly bits down there. i can try to avoid laying my bike down on the derailleur side at least. never ripped one off/smashed one into oblivion...
