Feeling the lag
Guardian News Story

Interesting subject:

This guy has degenerative brain condition and is taking legal steps to ensure that should his condition deteriorate to the point where he cannot move or communicate that doctors must keep him alive even if they feel his quality of life is zero.

Personally I think I might want to be (humanely) killed if I were just a brain trapped in a body unable to move or communicate. This guy clearly feels different.

Any takers?

I don't really see the point, unless he thinks that in the future a medical miracle is going to be able to returns him from his veggie state......
Even then and if, was it worth it???

Whatever floats his boat. It is his life. Personally, I think I would rather just move on to whatever comes next. But then, I am not facing a certain slow death like this guy. But that makes it even more of a no-brainer in my book. I just cannot see myself dragging it out. Where is the sanctity of Life when you don't even know you are living it?

It's a bit of tricky one (IMO) for the follwoing reason:

Once he can no longer communicate, what happens if he changes his mind? And that applies regardless of his initial desire.

I think I'd hate being kept alive if I could not communicate.

Not even tricky. He becomes a slave to the last request he made before he lost his communication abilities. We cannot worry about the 'What if's". He made his choice, now he has to live with it.

somehow, that's funny :D

I have a DNR order for myself, nah, just kiding. Whichever decision a person makes, it takes more courage to go the other route. I would say staying alive takes courage, but he's probably afraid of death, whereas it's the opposite for me.

TV ain't good enough for that to be strictly my life. I'm guessing the guy's ears and eyes still work? If he's that desperate to stay alive, why not freeze 'em?

maybe he should get one of those probes that christopher walken had in "the mind snatchers". That would cover a multitude of maladies. Of course, he'd need someone to push the button for him every few minutes.

hey! In their day, they were awesome. Granted, in their day, I was like 8yo and probably a bit of hero worship... I lived across the street from their recording studio, used to kick around the soccer ball and play pinball with those guys and some of my friends... the brothers were way cool.

No pedofile-type jokes, they were good people.

I would probably want to be unplugged after awhile.

I say if he wants to be a sack of flesh pumping blood then as long as his cash reserves allow....keep him pumping. When the check bounces....say good night Gracy.
