My ISIS BB is beginning to sound like there is sand in it so I'm thinking about ponying up the scratch to get some of them new-fangled external bearing bb & crank set-ups (and replacing my prodigy DH cranks).

While checking out Park Tool's website about install instructions (that site really is a great resource), I noticed they have install instructions for Shimano, RaceFace & FSA mega eXo cranks.

They appear more similar to Shimanos that they do raceface in that the spindle is fixed to the drive side and the opposing pinch bolts on the non-drive side. Only the spline looks different.

I was think raceface atlas for my RFX until I heard about the diabolus cranks boogering in a way that make them impossible to tighen down.

Anyone hear about the FSAs? Any word on availability? I'm guessing that they'll be reasonably priced given FSA's track record.

I'm sure Truvativ will also have their Giga X Pipe in a MTB version. I haven't heard much about the new external offerings beside Shimano and Raceface.

You could always contact RF and ask them if they have come up with a solution yet or check out the XTs...

Ive been riding these cranks really hard on my prototype 5" bike and they have held up very well. They are lightweight, set up easy, and have performed nicely.

Id buy them for my personal bike.

DW - What is your favorite version of the external/integrated BB system among the various companies out there and why?

Its too bad Sweetwings went out of business - I had some - those were pretty cool for their time...

I prefer the Mega EXO because it is ligghtweight, doesnt creak, doesnt come loose, and the non drive arm does not strip out. So far they have been great.

I like XT cranks. I've had mine for 6 months with no problems. They're strong and really light.

Given that you probably cant get the FSAs.
Shimano have hollow arms and pinch bolts on the non drive side.
They have also had their product out for longer with no serious issues from what I've heard.

DW do your FSA cranks have a steel pedal insert?

It would be nice if someone offered a 2-pc crankset with steel arms.
I bet it could be done with a lower total weight than diabolis or saint.
Saint is barely lighter than FSA pounders + cro-mo ISIS BB.

I wanna see some X-type pounders.

FSA has a full line of external bb (MegaExo) cranks comin, and they look badass. There are a few different mtb models:
K-Force MegaExo - Carbon XC cranks
V-Drive MegaExo - similar to the current v drive arms, but set up with external bb
Gamma Drive MegaExo - XT/LX level

I believe, that these cranks and bottom brackets will be interchangeable with Race Face and Shimano's. They use a 24mm spindle.

They also have an external bearing ISIS bottom bracket for use with any isis crank. It's kinda heavy at 290 grams, but should prove to be more durable than current ISIS offerings.

This stuff will be showing up on 05 bikes, and will probably be available aftermarket by the end of the year I would guess.

Nice now I can combine the cro-mo arms of the pounders with a durable X type BB system. Perfect I need a new ISIS BB anyway.

I'm running a set of Diabolus and this is the first I've heard of any problems.

FSA had them on display in the Expo area of the Crankworx festival in Whistler this weekend.

They do have a steel pedal thread insert, and are a hollow style arm.

ok.....this adds to the FSA crank discussion how?

on topic:

those FSA cranks do look sweet, and they dont look like they weigh 8lbs either. I for one am waiting for middleburn to make some oversized 2piece cranks

Yeah, Dave rides all the time.
What I actually said was how sweet it was that Dave was at Snowshoe racing on a bike he designed with everything else he had going on,
in course conditions that were horrific.
And he yelled for me louder than anybody else out there as well. :thumb:
