For those of you that work in an office that employs an after hours cleaning person, do you ever show up in the morning and have things placed differently or even missing? I've never had anything missing, but I have had some strange windows open on my computer occasionally. Sometimes things on my desk will be moved...an occasional mystery item will show up. I doubt he/she is intentionally screwing with my things, but it does make me wonder.

I came in one Thursday, and my 3rd Gen iPod and dock were missing. Gone, even the power plug. My coworker's extra cell phone, which was charging, was gone too.
Called the cops, it was clearly the cleaning crew, or people they brought with them. Hell, even some of the numbers that were called on his cell phone were to the cleaning company, and stuff like that.
Funny thing is, my iPod battery was shot, had to be plugged in at all times, and it was old.
Pissed me off so much.

The owner of the company denied that it could be them, but come on, I was the last person to leave that night. Now they come during the day, and totally mess with my work schedule, and my office is never as clean as it was.

Never ever leave stuff laying around. Where I work we found that it was the security people who were stealing computer.

Seems like common sense to me. No ones around + valuable stuff on desks not locked down + low paid janitors = Stuff gone.

I have this happen all the time, but it's usually because I'm really drunk at work.

At my old job, my boss called security/building manager one time because everything on my desk had been swept onto the floor. I never did tell him that it was because I nailed the secretary on it the night before.

I never leave anything valuable out and most of my important information on the comp is password protected. It's hard enough to trust some people when they're in the presence of others, but alone in an office building is another story altogether.

even high paid janitors steal stuff!

I had a case of chocolate covered oreos that were left over from some fund raiser in my "office" stashed away. I opened the box one day to find it only about 1/4 full. I started to watch the things depleat. I started keeping track of how many there were in the box and when they were disapearing! I am down to 1 left in the box... It was no surprise to find that the fat azz lazy janitor who doesn't really clean my room, was the one eating them! not much we can do about it...

I thought about covering some oreos in melted exlax and have a go at making this lard azz sh!t himself! after all, he was eating between 3 and 10 a night! That would be enough exlax for this guy's colon to just drop out!

We had a number of wallets / purses / small items dissapear a couple of years ago when some contract work was being done on the heating and air system. The culpret basically went into every room to do his "repairs" and if nobody was there, they stole what ever wasn't nailed down.

Otherwise the only problem I've ever had was one day the cleaning lady sucked the cord of my headphones up with the vacuum. (she even offered to pay for them, which I refused) Our cleaning staff comes in the morning and are very friendly, stop and chat, ask about the kids, etc. First rate crew.

Lucky enough to say we haven't had that happen.

If we did, I would wire up a couple of our web cams to record all night.

Be sure to butter the bathroom floors and stick a cam in there.

I'd probably go the bear trap route.

I don't leave anything of value at work, and my machine is locked when I'm not around.

I remember a security guard at Intel getting caught surfing porn on a co-workers machine. He set up a webcam and busted him.

When I worked in a small office downtown, the company next door came over saying we had sneaked into their office at night. They found a half open beer in one of the offices. Turns out it was the cleaning dude stealing beers from our fridge and he forgot where he set it down.

People around here claim to have change stolen if they leave it in their desks. This one sketchy janitor carries around a giant zip lock bag full of coins.

The other Janitors are the nicest people on earth but not the sharpest.

One of the other engineers here has had derogatory notes left on sticky notes stuck to her monitor: Slut, skank, bitch, etc... We're a small 30-40 person office and I still can't figure out why nothing was ever mentioned by management to the company. I'm pretty sure the nice janitor lady wouldn't be doing this sort of thing..

I swear it... if someone steals the red stapler off of my desk, I'm going to kill them.

Yes... I actually have a red stapler. A Swingline, of course.

Never ever ever leave your computer without logging off or locking it, even if you're just going down the hall for coffee,
If you don't do that around here, someone will send out a group-wide email from your account that shares too much information. It does make the time go by, though.
