I was in line at my company's cafeteria grill, waiting for my Friday burger and fries. A guy behind me started complaining about how long it takes to even get your order.

A bunch of people start agreeing and complaining as well. Keep in mind the grill man is running around getting the food ready. So I turn around and ask the complainer,

"Ever work in a restaurant?"

Answer, no. I decided to leave it at that.

I have worked in a bunch of kitchens and I rarely try to complain. I have noticed that ex-waiters are a hell of alot more bitchy about things that ex-kitchen staff though.

I worked in the kitchen... no way in HELL I'd be a waiter... :dead:

I am always nice to servers when I go out to eat. It's a crappy thankless job.

What I hated was that the complainers were talking about multi-tasking, a very important concept for a computer company, and I was thinking, this guy is busting his hump behind the grill, I wouldn't go any faster.

I know that IF i did (which of course I never have) I wouldnt spend the bulk of my paycheck on either gold teeth or air jordans.

I worked in a pizza place for about 3 months. That was more than enough for me.

I never bitch about it because you never know what might happen if you do.

I have been a dishwasher (summer job Jr High), waiter, corporate waitstaff trainer, Bartender and a front of House Mgr. (in charge of Waitstaff, bartenders & Hosti) So I think I can safely speak of some experience on this issue. For the most part its hard work, and like all companies some employees are better at their job than others.
If your in a restaurant with waitstaff let your tip speak about the service, I do tip generously myself, unless the service is bad then I leave a bad statement tip behind.

If your complaints are in a cafeteria, then all bets are off as there is no enhanced tip for good performance. If there is truly an issue ask to speak with the Mgmnt.

Back in the day when I was humping for tips I treated my grill guys like royalty, often buying a cold case a beer if I had a good week and give it to them at the end of a shift and we would sit in the back lot and knock a few back. and the neat thing was my orders hardly where ever delayed, or looked bad or where mis-made.

Yup. Hated every second of it. I don't get too worked up about much. All I ask is that I don't run out of beer.

Yea, I do. I work in a fiftys style joint, and it pissed me off when people complain how slow the service is.

They want their food cooked well done, but they don't want to wait for it. I think there is a special spot in hell reserved for them.

My dad is a chef - well retired now, but yeah I used to work at the restaurant w/ him doing all types of jobs. It's pretty hard, stressful, intense work. I always appreciate when someone cooks - in a restaurant or home cause I know what it takes.

My brother is a chef, and I worked for him for 2 summers. 2 long, hot, stupid summers that should have been spent really ****ing off, instead of making decent money. :nopity:
But we obtained alot of free beer, and met some cool girlies, so it wasnt a total waste of time. Wrecked a golf cart too. You wouldnt beleive how far those things will fly!

washed dishes: one hs job. not bad. the owner let us drink while we were closing.
prep cook/cook: I got promoted! More stressful. Got to munch on shirmp and scalops and other stuff. We got left over prime rib on Sat nite if there was any left. And more beer.

waited tables: for 3 months in college. my personality didn't mesh.

The old man is a life time restaurant man, mostly for larger companies setting up franchieses (sp?). He's told me some pretty good stories from the last 40 years. How many of you have been locked in a walk-in by a robber.....more than once?

My dad did something similar for about 25 years, but it was setting up and running distribution centers that distributed food for the franchise everyone loves to hate.

Line cook....i was really into it for a while

It allowed me to express my inner asshole while still doing a good job. I was a the closest thing to a sous chef at a up and coming place in west philly doing asian fusion...it was to say the least interesting.

We had an awesome stereo system in the basement where the kitchen is. I loved prepping for 3 hours in the morning and then pumping out 200 covers for lunch with just me and another guy. that groove you fall into is so....comfortable. I usually did sautee and expo while my other guy did fry and grill. I had everything set up just the way I liked it then I quit when I was offered a job at a photo store, www.webbcam.net .

Free photo equipment is better than free food.......Anyone want some global knives?:rolleyes:

I had a relationship with a women for 13 years that was a chef. I ate out a lot. as she was never home. It seemed like a lot of trouble for a job that 1.) didn't pay much. 2.) had ****ty hours. and 3.) required to much dedication for the prior points.....

i help run the snack bar at the pool at my school between water polo games and swim events. when it's a big tournament or swim meet we can make over $500 in 3 or 4 hours. it can get pretty difficult trying to keep all the orders for burgers, hotdogs,quesadillas,chili, and chicken straight. i don't think i would ever want to work in a resturant...

Food Service is for a certain type of person. It's not a job, it's a lifestyle. Work hard, play hard, rehab ... repeat. Took a break and went to school for engineering. The problem solving and math was fun, but I couldn't really adjust to the culture ... or the idea of sitting on my ass. Back into the biz I went, only now I run a bakery. Pushing 40 these days so running on yeast time is a little more managable than chasing tickets. But when I was in me 20's ... there could not have been a more perfect job than the line. Expecially at a 24hr high end exhibition style joint just up the road from two upscale strip clubs. I'd walk on the line at 11pm, the Chef would say "Clean the slicer" [code for rails laid out on the slicer], and then he'd leave. As soon as the clubs closed, all hell broke loose. Thems were the days. :cool: :rofl:

Hey! I read Kitchen Confidential too......

and yes, it is a job but it quickly becomes a lifestyle.

but for now F*** the food industry.......too much importance is placed on it by those stuck in it's grasp.

Very nice, i worked at BK when i was in highschool and i know what teh cooks go through. Kudos for saying something and sticking up for the poor guy running his ass off in the back
