NICE! you finally found an RAC too. got an interesting story on how you found it? serviced it?
Nothing really that crazy, I found a guy in Germany with one who wanted an old fork I had laying around. Worked out a trade/cash deal...As for the rebuild some cool Italian dude on facebook saw I had one and offered to send me some detailed instructions. Once I got those it wasn't too bad, it's a fairly simple fork internally, just like the old z1's.

To be honest I was really not feeling the RAC, but then I'm a big Monster fan!
But I have to say it looks really sweet on there.
Who woulda guessed.

Thanks Slope. I always thought the RAC was a goofy fork back in the day, huge crown looked weird on all those old skinny tubes. Then I started thinking the thick bones of the SL and the color might work well. I think it does, I also posted on this vintage dh mtb page on facebook, mixed feelings. Whatever, it's mine and I think it worked out nicely.

I actually have an old monster on the wall (i'm not a crazy collector, just have a couple things), but I had seen many of those back in the mid 2000's, wanted this or a Dorado SC to complete the package.

Interestingly enough, I think buying a RAC might actually be an investment...Seems to be a crazy price for these lately and I'm assuming it won't go down...Never thought of a mtb fork as an investment but some of them are turning into that. Last one I saw on eBay was up for $2500...crazy

Amazing bike! That RAC is so rare. I remember very well drooling over it and wondering when they would be *really* available.

There were several nice forks in those days that are now collector's items. Marzo RAC, Manitou Dorado SC, Marzo Shiver SC, 1998 Marzo SuperT, Manitou Supernova.

I almost bought a Supernova, but I was too poor to justify it over an XVert Super on close-out at JensonUSA...

You have it right on, it's crazy the money people are asking for some of these forks now...Was just telling a friend it's getting like vintage cars. I don't have many plans for this other than to cruise it around, I have current bikes for real riding. I really loved the cool niche' products from back in the day when I was in college (couldn't afford any of this stuff).

Which was more rare? The Dorado SC or RAC? I have yet to find real numbers on how many RACs were ever sold? Again I found this one in Europe but I don't know they were ever sold in North America...Were they? I was just a shop rat at that time.

Dorado SC was always the best-looking to my eyes. It was a bit overdone w/ the graphics, but strip those off and it's really killer.

I'm going to be honest here, I both hate and absolutely love it at the same time. Those Zebra chairs though, got nothing but love for those.

I want to like it so very badly because I know lots of work went into it, but I just can't. My eyes hurt. Sorry shortbus!

You don’t have to feel bad about not liking my bike, I’ve been getting heat on builds with DTC forks on this frame since I bought it new back in 2000whatever that was. Then I got plenty of heat on color choices.
Besides, very little actual work went into building this bike, most if not all parts are left overs lol. Not that it should affect whether someone likes the bike or not.
I personally love it. Been loving it for over 10 years so at least I’m consistent.

Totally man, I got some flack for putting that RAC on mine above. To each his own!

I absolutely love that rac on your SL!

Funny thing, when this rebuild project started for me it started with me almost getting a NOS shiver SC (Barilla) to put on my white Sovereign, but I found this DOT for a third of the $ so imperial it was.
May still get the shiver SC down the road :-)

Too bad the trails were so wet.

Disregard the lasso of extra line on those brakes...just trying them out.

Same exact story here, except I gave up on waiting for Evil and bought a Blur4X, which I do not regret.

This was the original color I wanted. I waited for a while... then chose black... which was also then not available. Eneded up w/ silver. The green still looks great to my eyes.

And the 521’s were the WIDE rims!
D321 were wider but buttery soft and disc only. Quite some people here chose 521 over the 3's even for DH usage coz they were allegedly stiffer and less prone to bent flanks.
Still have two or three 321’s laying around.
