Evil DRS Shifting problems, Help before I tear my hair out!

I installed my Evil DRS tonight. I am having quite a time with my front derailleur adjustment.....

Since the bash ring is quite large, I need to run the derailleur at a height so that it can clear the lexan plate when I go to shift into my middle ring. This causes chainrub pretty bad in granny when I am in small gears in the back. I dont care so much about that.

The problem I am having is that for some reason I cannot find an even ground where I can smoothly shift from granny to middle and back. Its as if the height of the derailleur causes the wrong portion of the derailleur cage to hit the chain and thus I can either shift up well and not down, or down well and not up.

I have adjusted derailleurs a million times and never had this problem. Tomorrow I am going to start from scrap again with the derailleur and give it another shot.

One thing that was strange was that if I set the index so that it took three "clicks" to go from granny to middle, it works. I think the height of the derailleur required by the bashring makes it so that one up or downshift has to cover too much distance where the chain runs through the cage. Argh!

Im too frustrated to try any more. Has anyone had a similar problem? Please?


Ill email the guys at evil tomorrow if i cant get it working and cant find anyone here who has tried it.

I am running a 32T middle, 22T granny.

I have set up a few with no problems, I personally set up the front derailleurs where when your supposed to be in the large chainring it only goes to the middle. My personal bike is set up that way and it works perfect.

What he said. I've set up one of my bikes (DRSes on both) so it took one click, and the other bike so it took two clicks, and while both work, the two click set up is definitely less finicky.

--edit-- another plus about the two click setup is that should you knock your shifter, or should your front derailleur ghost shift, your chain doesn't actually change rings. A plus when you go to sprint in the middle of a dh run and an unexpected shift to granny would be very unfortunate.

Yeah I got an email from the evil guys and they said that the same thing happened to them with a 32T middle and an xt der. I am simply going to do what you guys and he suggested and make it index two clicks to shift. Other than that problem, this thing is SWEET.

Evil also said that in november they will have smaller sized bashrings available. Perhaps Ill just shell out the extra bucks and get a smaller one at that time, or maybe theyll have some kind of trade-in deal.

Ill post again once I get this badboy working with some pictures.

Glad to see you got your parts in and your bike running. Welcome to the DRS club! And I needed a test pilot for those cranks...lemme know how you fare with them so I can get a set if they don't suck!:p

Are you using an e-type front derailleur? I don't even know if you can run the DRS with a normal derailleur, in fact, but if you are, switch to an e-type, which bolts straight to the inner plate of the guide assembly. I have perfect shifting with this setup, despite my wide-ranging 22/36t ring combo (which I heartily recommend.)

The only problem with it was that the derailleur cage drags a bit on the bashguard when it's in the middle ring, but I cured this with a dremel tool and file...I just filed away the offending edge of the cage and now it shifts fine and runs without interference.

Best of luck...I really dig that bike. Reminds me of my LocoMoto setup; lightweight freeride bikes are great fun.

Im running a normal stock xt der. I actually set it up pretty interesting but have yet to test it on trails. I still have it indexed for three shifts. In the granny, I can have it on the inside for high gears, or I can have it on the outside for low gears. One more shift and I have a flawless shift up to middle. Opposite in middle.

This way, I completely emilinate any chain rub in ever gear combo possible. Its alot easier than it sounds.

I might look into the e-type option. That sounds pretty decent.
For now its looking good the way I have it. How much do i even shift up front anyways?

I just decided on avids for brakes after a number of testrides. Seems pretty no-nonsense and maintainable.

I went for the 185 up front and 160 in the back with some sweet lil avid levers.

I should have my bike DONE next wednesday. So excited.

The cranks are AWESOME so far. Ive been pedalin round my house and up and down the street and they feel (and look) beeeefy. Heres a lil pic.

No opinion yet as to how theyll hold up. they use pedal washers so not much chance of stripping a pedal out like others. I think theyll hold up just fine and they feel stiff as hell (but what doesnt when you weigh 150?)

Glad to hear it all...

If you ever get a smaller bashguard and/or need to replace that front mech., I'd get an e-type at that point. But it does give a lot less freedom (none, in fact) in positioning the derailleur.

6 of one, half-dozen of another...just ride and enjoy!
