I run a 2.5 Highroller and 2.5 Mobster on my bighit right now, and seeing as how I can get the Highroller in 2.7 for $14, would it be really bad to run a 2.5+2.7 F+R setup? Or should I just look into a different front tire? (I can only find 2.5 mobsters) Maybe the Kenda Nevegal (or blue groove?)

well i guess my first question is do you need a new tire. are the old ones worn out or is it the fact that you want a new one. also something you can do since its cheap is go ahead and buy it put it on for a few rides and then switch back to your old setup and see which one you like better that is what i would do.

That's not important... I wanna know if I could run a 2.5 in front and 2.7 in the rear comfortably.

AND BTW... I live in SoCal, so it's ALWAYS summer here lol... (except for the past couple days)

ohh lol my bad. yes you can run it comfortably. but normally when you run two diff tire combos you run the bigger one in front cause of more braking force. but the bigger one in the back works just fine too. just give you a little bit bigger landing platform back there. :thumb:

You could but you'd be better off with the larger in the front, smaller in the rear.

Most of your turning etc...is all done by the front and the back sorta follows along. 2.7 front, 2.5 rear is a excellent combo. I dunno how many guys you'll find running a 2.7 back, 2.5 front. You can get away with a larger front/smaller rear also as it helps with rolling resistance etc...

You could do either one, Mobster up front/High roller rear. That's a great combo for Socal trails. You can do it the other way around too it doesn't really matter. Both tires are pretty versitile

My wife runs a 2.5x26 Minion F on the front and a 2.7x24 Highroller on the rear of her Big Hit. A lot of guys run this combo on Big Hits. Even though the tires are different widths, they look the same. You really cant tell by looking at them untill you look at the size on the sidewall of the tire. I think the width of the 2.7x24 is smaller than the width of the 2.7x26. It shouldn't be but it is.

When I ran a 26 front and a 24 rear, I usually ran a larger rear on my Fly.

I run a Maxxis Minion "Slowreezaay"40a 26x2.5 in the Front and a Maxxis Highroller 60a 26x2.5 in the back. It Seems to be a great Combo!

He is talking about a 26/24 combo so IMO you can run a wider rear. The widths of 24s seem to be smaller than they are rated at or compared to 26s.

somewhere really ****ty
i ran a 2.7 highroller in the back with a 2.5 slow reezay mobster up front for a while and it seemed to work really good. i had a 2.7 up front before but didnt really notice alot of grip going away but i did notice the large amt of weight savings from the 2.5

Lots of people ran that combo and loved it; however, I think that's mostly b/c the people I know who ran it were "hang-off-the-back" kind of DHers, and didn't much use their front tire anyhow...

Wider rear isn't an optimal setup, man, but it's better than not having a tire. You won't suddenly find that the bike is unmanageable or anything. Frankly, I doubt you'll notice it at all, until you get to the point where you drift comfortably in turns...then the rear might tend to feel like it's gripping more than the front, which is bad.

You might get the HR 2.7 for the front just to even things out, if it's available cheap, too. HRs work fine as a front tire in SoCal. Mobster is grippier, but it's also slower.

If you run a larger tire in the rear
your back end is going to have a trendency
to "push" your front end around corners.
Which isn't really bad just not as efficent as
a same tire size, or sm rear/lrg frt.
It is a wierd feeling though.
I'd reccomend the Kendas though.
I had very good luck this season with the
2.35 Blue Groove in the rear,
And either 2.35 or 2.35 Nevegal in the
front. The Nevegal has a better bite
and the Blue groove is a better roller.
At Big Bear though I rode 2,5 Nev's
in front and rear. Super loose there.
Plus they're much cheaper than the Maxxis.

the 24 widths run smaller though.....

A 2.5x26 Minion F is the same width as a 2.7x24 Highroller

I have them both sitting in front of me right now and they are the same width. Maxxis needs to get their sizes right.

It's always been the accepted way to run your tires, bigger at the front and smaller rear or both the same. I've never tried it the other way around though. I think the comments of the 24 x 2.7" being about the same width as a 26 x 2.5" are right though. Fit the tyre try it out. If it's not working for you then you only spent $14 and can probably sell that tyre on for $10. Or give it away for good karma. :)

Thanks Mike, that was exactly what I needed to know. You going to the race this weekend?

Livin it up in the O.C.
Runn bigger in front smaller in rear (the opposite of J-Lo) ;)

If you are pushing hard in a corner, you want the rear to wash out first.
If the front does, you are going DOWN.

On a similar note, IRC Kujos come in 24" 2.35 and might be had cheaply. They have crap performance in SoCal, really (and I hear elsewhere as well), but hey, if you want a rear end that breaks free, there's your tire...

Kenda has some 24", too, I think.

I ordered the tires last night... I figure if the 2.5 bugs me that much I'll just get a new front tire.

I mean, the tires I have are still good, I think I can still get a lot out of them, I'll just be careful to be extra abusive of my front tire so it'll wear evenly with the rear so when it's time to change tires, I can just switch both. (there's nothing wrong with me if my front tire hardly ever wears right?)

thats what i heard, but at a lowish pressure on the rocks and roots and loam here in western nc they work great for me. however i would certianly not run one as a rear tire.

People said the same about the wtb weirwolves but man i thought that tire kicked ass on my turner for xc riding.

just remember to rotate them every 9000 miles in a diagonal across pattern.
