what is the best way to determine if the head-tube and/or the bottom bracket-'tube' need(s) to be faced.....without actually facing it. I have a new Specialized Enduro frame that I am about to build up. I was wondering how concerned I need to be....and what are the guidelines...Thanks

I don't know for sure, but if the frame has never been built before, it needs to be faced. Your lbs can do it for like $18.

Faced headtubes and bb shells will not have any paint on the mating surfaces or threads. It is possible that the frame was faced and chased then painted but that'd be dumb because it would need to be done again.
