im looking for a fast rolling front tire to replace my 2.3" vertical pro UST (continental [sp])......i do mostly single track (rocky, dryclay, rooty, sometimes damp) but i do ride asphalt and fireroads with the GF.......

ill keep the VP on the rear for traction but would like a good traction/fastrolling tire for the front, what tires should i be looking at......it will also have to be a UST tire

I use a kenda cortez in the 2.4.They roll great and have great traction for the type of riding that you have there.I also use a hutchinson python in the 2.3 and they are great rollers and plenty of traction.Try them out.

if you want to roll faster, you need a faster rolling REAR tire, not front tire. the drag is from the wheel you're propelling, not the wheel that is along for the ride.

that's what my experience has taught me. I tried using semi-slick/small knob tire combos both ways, and I found that the combo is best when the serious knobs are on the tire that is controlling your steering, and the slicker tread on the tire that you crank with your drivetrain.

find some old well-used tires and try the combos for yourself -- maybe it's different for you, I don't know... but I would be surprised if you didn't find that you prefer the slicker tread on the rear.

for example, the Small Block 8 would be a great rear tire for use with a Nevegal or Blue Groove or Minion F front tire if you're trying to reduce drag and pedalling resistance while still being able to hold a good line at speed in fairly sketchy conditions.

WTB WeirWolf 2.1 or WTB WeirWolf 2.3 which one of these might work better on the rear?

im guessing the 2.1 will roll faster cause of the width:clue:

Most go bigger up front/smaller in the rear.....

And there's so many tread designs out there.....you want a fast rolling tire up front.....and a good braking tire in the rear. I dunno what the exact figure is but most of your traction comes from the front and the rear just sorta follows.

Alot of company's have many different designs......but as an example (this is just one) you could run a Minion up front and a Larsen TT out back.........or a Larsen TT up front and whatever out back you get the picture. Larger fast rolling tire up front........whatever rear you want.

I like the Kenda stuff.........the above combo would work great as well!

i was looking at the kenda "Small Blocks" for a front tire. has anyone rolled one of these yet?

block *s are like 2.3 TTs. Eight rows of small knobs with the BIG AIR capacity casing. Love the multi-mid-sized-knobs.
I was using 2.3ust vert pros for a year and a half. The slow wear time is awesome but not as fast or grippy as the nevigal ust. I am now using the 2.1ust nevigal in the rear and the 2.3 vert pro ust front.

No big story........hell even back in my BMX days I ran a larger up front/smaller in the rear. Ever since I've been into MTB'ing it's been the same as well.

You don't want to go too extreme though. Like......I'll use a 2.7 up front, 2.5 in the rear. I wouldn't jump much smaller than that in the rear. Usually one size smaller in the rear is OK. 2 sizes and I dunno.....I've never done it or seen it that much. If you are running a 2.3 up front you could run a 2.2 outback OR a 2.1 depending on how big the casing is for that given size. I'm not familar with Conti tires so I'll leave that one alone :)
