I am extremely glad that no one in my family now falls into this category. My dad has completely re-done his life in order to become healthy. Prior to his last three years of trial and error and finally success, we all watched with worry and concern as he battled a lifetime of genetics and bad eating habits and continued to grow rounder. My mum has also dropped many sizes, though never obese, prior to the life time changes in our family she was oft described by my friends as "the cute, round, grandmothery type figure." Knowing how hard they worked to get where they are now, I know it's not impossible for anyone to become healthy, if they're committed and if everyone close to them is supportive.

Now, I lived in Japan and China, and both had community exercise programs. In Japan the lifestyle in the smaller town I lived with had a daily "stretch" that was voluntary, and healthy, and got the community together every morning to stretch and exercise together. Additionally, high fat foods like ours were still quite unknown to them - oddities, not normal foods. If anything, I think the US would do well to learn from its more slender and healthy peer nations to make some changes.
I firmly believe the changes start at the family and community level - I live in an apartment in a smaller town, if they had a daily stretching session I'd definitely find a way to participate or at least support it however I could. I also agree that it needs to be a national effort to really get the communities involved. I'm not talking socialist styles here - just purely a voluntary group that gets their butts up in the morning, in the cold, outside, and chants their stretches out together and enjoys themselves before work, and encourages the fatsos to join them.
Doesn't this weigh on anyone else's minds?
