Discovered something last night while finishing up the paint repairs on the Roadie. If you paint a bike with many coats of matte black and sand the matte black down with fine grit sandpaper you can get a really cool ffiber effect.

I was sanding the bike down to get the old blue paint ready for rtepainting. This included sanding down the black top tube which I repainted with several coats of black primer... well as I sanded down the top tube I started really liking the effect. It looks like some kind of unfinished synthetic material. I hit it with some clearcoat and it looks really cool. I think I'm going to do the whole bike like that.

Pics when its all said and done.

if you want to do a real carbon fiber look when painting, you need 2-3 colors of paint, BLACK, Dark Grey and Light Grey or Silver. and some of theat shelf liner here this stuff

lay down your black on the area you want to cover with "carbon fiber" let it dry.
Come back and wrap the area you want with "carbon fiber" with the shelf liner and tape it on. Spray the Dark grey through the shelf liner mask and let it dry.
Once its dry, move the shelf liner aprox 1/8th of an inch and spray with light greay/silver. let it dry, remove mask and clear coat it!

it looks good once you practice it and perfect the technique... I have done it on helmets etc. for friends. It is pretty hard to shape the shelf liner around complicated corners and curves but it can be done!

Not only was I NOT going for a carbon look... I dont care that much about the look of the bike to go through that much trouble, nor would I want a bike that was wrapped in carbon fiber all poser style.

I'm just going to give it many thick coats of black primer, sand it dawn nice and smooth and thats gonna be it. I kind of like the look of the finish.

Anyway... here is a pic of it right after I sanded it. The layers of paint are thick enough where, after I sanded it down, the decals are totally flush and smooth. After the final few coats and after some sanding you wont ever be able to tell they were there.

I have it set up to ride because I want to ride it this weekend (I dont care how ghetto it looks), but after the ride I am taking it apart and finishing the whole frame.

Thats pretty much what I was going for. I thought it kind of looked like some sort of unfinished synthetic material though.
Reminds me of the old Spin composite wheels. :)

Thermo carbon composite-yadda-yadda. Buddy who owned the set called them carbon fiber. I called them plastic. :D

They had a strange dark grey brownish color with faint lines in it....if I remember correctly. It was a long time ago (circa 94ish)

My thermo plastic/carbon Time pedals look similar to that. Budget carbon methinks.
