for me there are several things I look forward to and take notice of while riding

tight and twisty singletrack
shifting so crisp and quiet your not sure it shifted
a trail that flows.. not too much up, not too much down.
riding with good friends.
clearing an hard section the first time.
clearing the section you normally can't
being outside on a cool summer day enjoying everything around you
a cold beer or 6 after the ride!!!

so whats your favorite?

Pretty much what you said. I'll add:

-Just stopping mid ride in the middle of no where and hearing nothing but the wind.
-Mountaintop views
-Taking a corner perfectly, tires just brushing one tree as you shoulder just brushes another.
-When you feel really strong and find you need to slow down for a turn while climbing.

Aside from what's been mentioned....

Riding with monkeys.
Riding a new spot for the first time and not knowing what's coming up next.
Post ride beer and food.

Oh, and golf once in a while is downright enjoyable. 'Course, I have not golfed in about four years. :think: Shame on stosh for bringing golf into a bike thread.

i dig golf, in small doses (too much of a time-sink to do w/ any regularity).
I think 9 holes is more than enough holes for one day. My friend keeps trying to get me to go, I say "listen, if I have 4hrs and $50 to blow I would much rather blow them on a day long road trip to go biking."

Aside from everything already stated...

Comradery and hanging with friends you only get to see at races.
Looking back in awe at that jump you just landed. :D
Adrenaline rush at races.
Wondering how the hell you managed to come out of that crash uninjured. :p ;)

in a bear cave
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens;
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens;
Brown paper packages tied up with strings;
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels;
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles;
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings;
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes;
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes;
Silver-white winters that melt into springs;
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Skookum, I like pulling the whiskers off kittens.
Maybe opposites do attract.
Give me a call.

Slacking at work
All the stuff in this thread so far, plus:

Ripping a gnarly stunt you designed and built.

That sting on your legs in the post ride shower when the hot water hits all the fresh little cuts from branches.

I like spots that I thought were too tough, but I finally nut up and ride them. I still have a few. I really dig Cameron Park in Waco. I like little 1 - 2 1/2 ft ledge drops on trails. I like drops best without the rolly rocks that come with them here. I really just like my bikes.

In a Van(couver) down by the river
-Tight technical singletrack
-That "what the hell am I doing!" rush that you get when hitting something you think is just (or WAY) outside of your ability.
-The immediate "holy s*** I made it!" that comes right after ^^^
-spotting, marking and cutting new lines thorught the trees, rocks and obstacles (with permission from the landowners, of course).
-getting muddy!

Snow Hall, tweakin on math
The dark roast coffee on a cold morning on the way to the trail

Loading up the truck, putting the collars on the dogs and their anticipation of a road trip to go riding

Pulling into the parking lot and seeing your buddies you haven't seen in a while, and the immediate schit talking that starts

Plus all the others mentioned here

Boston....outside of it....
-being outside (not propped on a couch watching TV and eating funyuns and thinking what color beige I should paint the bedroom)

-Nature

-Getting away from it all (you don't really think about problems other than the ones in front of you)

-The fact that people think I'm crazy because I ride a bike.

Floating down the Hudson
Zipping through a section that I couldn't do last week
The taste of orange Gatorade and chocolate peanut butter Clif Bars
Achieving absolute peace and quiet
Meeting other bikers on the trail
The look people give me when they see I'm a chick bouncing through the mud and hopping over things.
Knowing that I have about 2,000 calories to consume post-ride
The gentle squish of my shocks through a technical section
Racing the wildlife
Peeing anywhere I want in the woods :p

different shack, same shotgun
all of the above, and the post ride feeling you get in your legs while putting down a cold one:

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer
(he likes beer)

My wife often frowns when we’re out on the town
And I’m wearing a suit and a tie
She’s sipping vermouth and she thinks I’m uncouth
When I yell as the waiter goes by

(chorus)

Last night I dreamed that I passed from the scene
And I went to a place so sublime
Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine (awww)

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I love beer
(yes, he likes beer)

Favorite? That would be just getting to go. I don't get to much now because it is always raining on the weekend and I don't get done with school in time to go during the week. :(

Feeling suspension squish underneath you delivering yet another smooth ride over a drop (no matter what the size).
The burning in my lungs from a long death climb.
Going so fast through tight, twisty single track that you have to stop to look around and see where you are riding.
Sharing good times riding with friends.
