I grabbed my ol' Pentax P30 slr from my mom's house on a recent visit under the pretext of starting to use it again. Having not dropped film off for processing in, oh, 15 years or so, am I wrong in assuming you can get film converted right straight to digital in this modern day and age?

You can, but it tends to be expensive. If you're going to do it in any sort of volume you should get a scanner of some sort. Either a high-end flatbed or a dedicated film scanner. Of the two, I prefer the film scanner - they're more efficient when working with large volumes of slides. The one I've been using is a Nikon Coolscan 5000. Unfortunately they're no longer being made and are quite expensive. If for some reason you want one, I'm trying to sell mine (I bought it to scan my family's photos and no longer need it).
