well...not really a sponsor so to speak, but i like to think of it that way :D

i was told, when i joined the new unit, that i would have to ride the "issued" bike instead of my P2 for uniformity issues. i was skeptical at first but yesterday, i got my new ride. it's a Giant police edition (duh), pretty much an XTC frame with beefed up chainstays. the fork is an OEM Judy 2 but has lockout, preload and rebound adjustment (i have a bet with a friend on how long it'll take me to blow the fork  )

anyway, i also got a set of sweet spy sunglasses w/ 2 sets of lenses, (clear and amber), uniforms are on the way and i got a nice set of shimano spd shoes, although i'm probably going to use my flats anyway.

i had to make some mods to "MaNIMALIZE" it for my style but overall, not a bad bike for free  i still can't get over the fact that i'm being paid to ride :happydance: :happydance:

before MaNIMALIZATION

MaNIMALIZED

i still have a few more mods to make, may eventually put my extra set of avids on it but that'll come when i find a cheap set of disc hubs.

If you could get any bike to be your ride for police duty, what would it be?

I can imagine scenarios like pursuits through urban environments where something like a P2 combined with a modicum of street riding skillz would be rather advantageous.

yeah, those tires kinda blow, contemplating putting my specialized rhythyms on it.

damien - i was riding my P2 and i loved it. nothing like chasing a guy and gapping some stairs to get to him :D

moto- we got them at SPINZ in high point.

Are they making you keep the kickstand? Could impair your persuit of purps down stairs if it pops open after a good bump.

Also a top tube pump mount for a nightstick could be cool :D and maybe some handlebar mounted tazers.

I read the headline ("Finally, my sponsor hooked me up with a new ride") and thought maybe your wife bought you a bike...

nothing's in the bag...that's why i took it off. my request to use my camelback Havoc was approved. i'd much rather carry my gear in my camelback than on the back of the bike. throws off the center of gravity too much and i can't get behind the seat when i need to.

i'm probably going to throw a bashguard on it in place of the big ring. oh yeah, i was also issued three pair of the cool "POLICE" cycling socks :D that's almost my favorite part.

hmmm, i wonder if i can talk the dept. into getting me a kona howler or something :D you know, to take the edge off ;)

If you're chasing a perp and you have to ditch the bike, do you stop and put down the kickstand? :)
pretty much...as moto said, we have a nifty little trick for high speed dismounts. i never worried about it on the P2, not afraid to just drop that thing but this Giant isn't quite as durable so i'll probably whip out the kickstand trick more often.

and no, it won't come down when i don't want it to. the spring on it is massive and tight.

Any way they'll let you swap out much? New parts (mainly the fork) on that frame would make for a killer chase bike...

You might be the only cop in history I have seen that is actually able to chase someone not in a car :busted:
easy now...i've never lost a foot chase and i'm not a sprinter by any means. i just keep them in sight until they get tired then :bonk: :D

there are a lot of really fast running cops that i work with. my old beat partner's foot chases never last more than 10 seconds before he snags the dude. we've stopped buying him beers after work for catching the runners because we were afraid he'd turn into an alcoholic ;)

but yes, chasing on a bike is WAY more fun  :busted: :happydance:

I hope you've been practising your high speed dismount to Weaver stance move mate.

Hey...
I can chase on foot...dont like to, but I can if I have to. Pout, pout!
Besides, you cant outrun Motorola! Or a Belgian Malinois!
haha, funny you mention K9. i recently took a bite on the bike for K9 training. The dog hit me harder than any crash that i remember. holy crap that was crazy! btw, it's hard to ride in the redman suit :D

I never appreciated just how valuable and powerful a tool a K9 is, until I took a hit with the wrap. A 60 lb. dog should not be able to throw a grown man around like a rag doll!

Jeronimo, you have to remember who is buying the sled; not the rider, but the municipality. If Manimal was buying it, I am sure it would spec out quite a bit differently. Also, the Dept. will never expect you to ride the way most of us do on our own stuff, and would certainly have a hissy fit if they found out Manimal was jumping staircases or wall riding on a Dept issue bike!

Every issued cop bike I have ever seen would not last six weeks under me without a drivetrain failure. That Giant would not be an exception to the rule.
Especially that spindely cranks set up and those pedals!!! Those pedals make me cringe!!!

If I was the TAX payer I have to reccomend clipless for effecientcy (sp?) and some cranks worth exerting the energy to spin without snapping them and wacking your knee into broken-ness.

Manimal..... send us the email to the Chief and we'll see if we can get you hooked up with something that wont break you!!!

Hey do you (when your chasing a guy) rub his back tire or reach over and grab his front brake and endo him???:busted: :busted:

take a closer look at the cranks and pedals. cranks are truvativs, hussefelts to be specific, but spec'd w/ a triple chainring setup for the po-po edition. it also has a GIGA-Pipe BB. the pedals ARE clipless, although i will be riding my easton flats, we were issued some pimp shimano police edition spd shoes. I voiced my concerns to the giant rep about the durability of the bike. he showed me the spec list, which, as i discovered, is not on any website for some reason:rant:. my fears were assuaged when i saw the specs. just a few minor mods on my part and i've got a trustworthy work steed.

the only thing i'm really worried about, for the type of riding i'll be doing on duty, is the fork. if i had something else to put on my P2 i'd throw my DJII 20mm on it
the stair gaps and hucks are few and far between. have you ever tried riding with a ballistic vest on under your shirt and about 25lbs of cumbersome gear strapped to your waist? it'll cramp your style a little bit for sure.
