just saying that for a DH race, pushing it can lead to bad things. i never rode over my head in a race, and since my talent level is mediocre to begin w/ , that meant i'd always end up a mid-pack finisher at best.

but why not push yourself?

dare to go faster, go harder, less brakes & more pedaling
Then walk away knowing you pushed yourself, left it on the course as they say...... And the next time she's riding down moose alley, she goes from keeping up to IAB to passing IAB and leaving him in her dust, thanks to her new level of skill & confidence
I don't know how long MBC has been riding, but I had been riding (like on a mtn bike at all) less than a year when I raced the "beginner" course at Plattekill. Some moron guy that I love and respect (but is still a moron in this regard) told me that very thing when I asked if he had any advice: "Stay off the brakes." :banghead:

I didn't know any better, and took his advice literally. I was waaay out of control and riding waaaay above my skillset. I crashed so badly, and so many times, the guys were stunned at the number and size of the bruises on my body. I had a red webbing pattern on my shoulder from where I crashed so hard on it, that the Dainese left an imprint. By the next race I was terrified. I kept racing and kept pushing myself because it is my nature to do so, but I was so shaken from the first couple races that it took some time to recover.

Any woman who puts herself on the downhill course of her own accord is already stepping outside the bounds of "female nature" that is hardwired for self-preservation. Most women of this mindset don't need to be told to go harder - they already do that. They usually need to be told to to relax.

well, I know MBC and have ridden with her several times, she is a good rider and has common sense (and she wouldnt just lay off the brakes till she crashes)

Finishing a race be it 1st or last is a great accomplishment, and I think its great she entered this race :D

right back at cha!
Thanks! I am sure you'll do great. Mt. Snow is a fun place to ride and from what I've seen, you'll have no problem cleaning the course. Definitely take your time and do plenty of practice runs. Every time you ride the course, you'll get more confident and go faster and cleaner.

Oh---love the helmet paint job too!!!

Good luck MBC! Most important bit of advice: have FUN! After you're done, pat yourself on the back for doing it then think about what you could do next to get even better (if you are so inclined)...I am jealous actually, planned on racing it too until a rock at Platty took my back out last week...

General course advice and description: The last Mt. Snow race will be the NORBA beginner/sport course. It consists (if my failing memory is correct) of: open fast ski slope; "Roxy's Rock" wood section (rooty turn into a big rock slab - fast/straight line is to the hard right; slower and safer line (that I take) is to the left; more open ski slope; hit some wooden jumps (or line around them) into the woods for rooty singletrack; more ski slope; over a pipe into more woods with a rock roll over; some fire road into the woods for the last section of rocks called the Bubba Shack - fast line is straight through them; safer line (my line!) is high right by the trees then into the rocks - I always bash my chain guide there and it's ALWAYS wet - a spring comes out at the bottom of the rocks. Then it 's out to the ski slope to the final sprint to the finish line!

Schawg for this race will be amazing; heard they are "cleaning out the closets" Won a Sirius satelite care radio system there last year!

Again, good luck and have a blast - Jim

my friend got a fork this w/e, it was sitting on the table next to socks, grips, pint bottles and a samll chain saw bear. The other podium dude asked about the bear, mr promoter said grab what you want..so he grabbed the bear, and my friend grabbed the fork...score!

I wish I could have saw the face of the dude that just grabbed the $8 grips...hahahaha!

note:it was a new rockshox recon

does Platty still give season passes to the series winners?
This year that are also giving away a trip to Miami/South beach - it'll be randomly picked out of all the Series winners...too bad I'm a solid 3rd overall in my class...

But still, Mt. Snow has the schwag of the season...they have been giving away an Iron Horse bike every race on top of all the booty.

That was me who won the frame! The Mt Snow swag is kick-ass. Race #1 I won spy goggles. Race #2 (2nd) very cool chic spy sunglasses. Race #3 I won 2.7 maxxis dh tires... and the bike. Looking forwards to race #4.

Good luck MBC!

Racing is fuuuuuuuuuunnnnn...

A bit of advice: practice wisely. For a long time I would do too many practice runs and get worn out before race time. Most people have the natural inclination to do a ton of medium-pace practice runs. I find that doing fewer ones, a few mid-pace and at least one or two at full clip, is a good idea.

As for the whole not using brakes thing...a lot of people who try racing downhill are naturally aggressive and want to push it. What ends up happening is they start racing, lose their minds and crash 14 times on their race run. When I finally took the advice to just ride my own pace and not try to be the fastest guy on the mountain, I won my next two races.

'Course, if you're a wuss, then by all means don't use the brakes.

if by shoot - you mean with a camera then you HAVE to get me! You'll know me by my helmet :)
yeah, i say shoot because it sounds cooler than "take pictures." :p i plan to be up on the course with my cameras(bringing both a film and digital) from when i get there until the race is over. i plan to shoot a roll or two during practice for a project i'm doing in advanced photo, but for the rest of the time i plan to use my friend's d50.
