i'm trying to put a 5th element on my 2002 Orange 222. i know there is some cutting/grinding involved to get it to fit...has anyone done this? i believe there were pictures on TF Tuned Shox website but they are no longer there. any help and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated before i start hacking up my frame :)

I modified a a 222 earlier this year for a guy so he could use a fifth on it.

Basically, you need to grind the inside of the rear most portion of the rails that the shuttle mount deal bolts to. It's not a big deal to do if you have a die grinder. Just bolt up the rear mount and take your time grinding just enough. You might be able to mount the shock backward and not grind anything. However, that is more unsprung weight.

i just got it to fit the other way instead of grinding it. i was afraid that the most slack position wouldnt be available but i got it to work. as for the extra unsprung weight i'll have to see how it feels before i do any grinding. i'm figuring the last 2 holes have to be grinded down

Good deal. I was pretty sure it would work.

You are going to want to try a realitively low pressure set-up to start. Less than 100psi.

how did u set it up? i noticed that....u do have to have the air pressure extremely low, but what about the...ummmm not sure what its called (i know what it does i just can't remember the name)...the big huge blue adjustment around the air valve?

I think we set it up with about 2 turns out on the volume adjuster. He had it at 120-150psi and the bike was nearly unridable. Unfortunately, he didn't let me lower the air pressure to 80 until after the US Open. The guy was used to the settings for the 5th on his M1 and didn't really want to change even the the 222 was completely different.

The bike felt good to me at about 80psi. Anything over 100psi was too harsh with that frame. In the end, the guy (a semi-pro/ex-pro racer) got pissed and sold the bike once he could get his hands on a 2005 V10. He likes the V10 a ton more since it suits his riding style.

The 222 seems to need to be ridden on the edge of going out of control to feel at all plush. It likes to skip off the tops of stuff and forces you to pump the terrain. Not my style but it works great for some.
