Fitting air valve to Specialized DHX 5

Hi Guys,

I am soon to take delivery of a Specialized SX Trail.

It is fitted with a Fox DHX 5 Coil. However Specialized have decided in their infinite wisdom that a pressure valve is not required for the boost valve reservoir. They spin some BS about the adjustability being available through the Bottom Out Adjuster and ProPedal. From my experience with a DHX5 on my demo9, a pressure valve is very necessary.

Anyway, I am curious if anyone has retrofitted a valve in one of these shocks.

I’m hoping I can remove the molten plastic seal and fit a valve.

Thanks, for any help and advice.

Funny you should ask that. I JUST bought a DHX 5.0 from one of our fellow monkeys. It was off a Specialized SX. So after making about an hour worth of calls, heres the deal. FOX will fix it. It'll cost about $60.00 for the parts, I can't remember if that was Parts AND Labor. I've emailed PUSH to see if they can do it also, since I'm going to have it PUSH'ed anyways. So there you have it. Have a nice one.

Try riding it first. It comes pre-pressurized and it may fit.

I bought an aftermarket dhx5.0 for my sx trail (with the air valve) and it does fit without the valve cap. Barely, but it fits. It clears by about 1/2mm. I actually filed a little chamfer on the end of the air valve for a little comfort clearance. (the newer sx trails have a slightly shorter shock shuttle, so it may not be as close as mine).

For adjustment you can just pull the upper bolt and rotate the shock sideways to access the valve.
