fixing sheared bolt in hole?

Well, I've just really done it. I was trying to knock loose a piece of crap stuck in the frame mount hole for my bashplate and I've sheared off a bolt in it. Its a long story filled with stupidity... but nevertheless... :dead:

I've attached a pic of the area I'm talking about.. except my bike is a newjackflash.

What I'm left with now is: bashplate is NOT on the frame, and the hole where it mounts has a bolt in it with the bolt head sheared off. The sheared bolt end is now flush with the hole.

My question is, what would be the best way to fix this? I've searched for this stuff and read some stuff about "heli-coil"... but not sure I understand it.

I was thinking it could be re-tapped to a slightly larger bolt size because there is about 2-3 mm room around the existing hole... can this be tapped into? but I have to get the bolt out of there first... :help: :help: :help:

Thanks for any and all tips everyone :)

edit: A pic of my PX is in my sig if that helps for better idea of the prob..

I'll look into that, thanks PsychO, I'm just worried that when I do get that bolt out, there are going to be ruined threads in the bottom of the hole.... because of that rock or whatever that was jammed in the hole riding somehow... (the broken bolt didnt make it all the way in before it broke)

Use an EZ out. To reduce the risk of damaging the thread start by center punching a little divot in the center of the bolt. If you have access to a Dremel use the smallest ball bur you can get your hands on to make the dimple a little deeper. This should keep the EZ out centered and stop it from damaging the frame. If you are using a drill with the EZ out go as slow and steady as possible.

When I'm trying to a remove a bolt, I usually drill a hole in the middle of it before using an EZ out. The holes gives the EZ out more to grab on to.

You should have no trouble taping a new larger thread when you get the old one out as the thread is in a 10mm ish cylinder welded in a hole through the frame and gusset and there is plenty of excess material.

You might not even need to bother as the thread is proberly long enough not to bother with a few dodgy threads at the end.

To get the obstruction out use a nail and hammer if its really stuck. Then shake it out of the hole in the bb shell otherwise it will rattle about in the frame.
