From SDMBA Trail News

Controversy has been growing over public access to trails in the area
known as Flightline (Carlsbad Oaks North) in Carlsbad. The trails
there are officially closed to all public use until further notice.
Please do not attempt to ride there, as it will jeopardize chances of
gaining legal access to the area in the future. Please respect all
posted signs and barriers.

Background

The City of Carlsbad refers to the area as Carlsbad Oaks North. It was
set aside as natural open space to mitigate impacts from commercial
development in the surrounding area. The land is owned by the County
of San Diego and managed by the Center for Natural Lands Management
(CNLM – a private, nonprofit organization). CNLM manages the property
under the terms of a Conservation Easement. CNLM does not set policy
and must comply with the terms of the Conservation Easement. The
Conservation Easement does not allow for bicycle use on the property.
CNLM inherited the legacy trails that were built on the property in
recent years without the permission or involvement of the County and
CNLM now has been ordered by the County to close the area to all
public access (not just bicycles) until this issue can be further
investigated.

SDMBA is working with the County and CNLM with the goal of securing
legal, permanent access to the area for all non-motorized trail users.
SDMBA will provide updates as the process moves forward.
