DENVER -- A passenger on a flight from Washington, D.C., to DIA reportedly tried to light his shoes on fire during the flight.

ABC News reports that federal air marshals on the flight stopped and restrained the man, who was a passenger on United flight 663 from Reagan National Airport to DIA Wednesday night. United flight 663 landed in Denver at 7:21 p.m.

According to ABC News, the man is from Qatar.

According to ABC News, the man was identified by authorities as Mohammed al Modadi, a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

How does a guy with that name get on a plane with dangerous SHOES?

Here's a hint TSA: ****ing scan clothing

edit: Haha

Look at fox news being a little sorority bltch

ABC News, which first reported the story, described the incident as an attempted "shoe bomb" attack, citing unnamed authorities, but Fox News' source said it did not appear to involve an explosive substance or device.

And hour ago they were running the same shlt as everyone.

they should have tased that mother f'er to death for trying that.

and what are the odds that a Air Marshall was on board when something like this happened?

Since he's a diplomat, i doubt he'll be arrested and or charged

I'm guessing the Diplomat is lucky a marshall was on board. He might have been beat to death by the passengers otherwise. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Technically, he committed a felony by trying to light up on board.

Maybe you should listen to the TSA....

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/04/security-breach-at-lax-closes-three-terminals.html

Hundreds of travelers waited on the sidewalk at LAX Thursday morning when officials shut down three terminals and delayed at least 14 flights because of a security breach.

All terminals were reopened within two hours of the 5 a.m. incident after authorities found a man who did not go through proper security screening, officials said.

Los Angeles International Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said the man was selected for secondary screening but instead picked up his carry-on bag and went through Terminal 7 around 5 a.m. Thursday.

Security screening at that terminal and connecting terminals 5 and 6 was halted while airport police looked for the man. The terminals house United, Continental, Delta and smaller airlines. Airport police located the man and re-screened his bag.

That is incorrect.

The US can request that his diplomatic status be revoked, and if the request is not complied with he can be expelled from the US.
And until they've gotten verification that he's a diplomat, they're going to treat him as a normal criminal--being that they're in-flight, it might take a bit to verify that. Even after that's verified and the marshals lay off, diplomatic immunity has no bearing on what the flight crew can or will do to him...

I guarantee he's being PNG'd immediatement.

Have we all become such sissies that one bloke going for a crafty ciggie causes soiling of the undergarments?
Apparently, reason went out the window on 9-11.

There are a frightening percentage of people in this country who are scared that the president is actually a muslim terrorist/the anti christ.
Here a muslim has smoked on a plane.. he's clearly trying to bring the thing down.

Only if he's a towel head.

Edit Oops Burley got in there quicker, and with more tact.

Can you blame the Air Marshall though? It must be terrible sitting on a plane for a job. This dude finally got to take someone down.

No ****, that has to be the toughest job in the world. I'm not talking about the danger, I'd end up shooting the smelly overweight super-talkative mouth-breather who has 7 carry ons sitting next to me if I got to pack heat on an airplane.

I don't think that's the issue--it's a dude going to the bathroom, the smell of smoke, and a claim that he's lighting his shoes on fire.

That's a pretty justified "let's break down this door and see what's happening."

And when it turns out he's having a smoke break, I think everyone on board can be legitimately pissed that he's made their flight a pain in the ass, the ****ter door's broken, and they now have to give statements on what happened and why.

And it should be a big deal when a diplomat attempts to abuse his immunity.

"Im lighting my shoes on fire"
I bet that's what a terrorist would say if he were actually attempting to do so and was asked about it.

Im liking the Donnie Darko sig BTW.

Well, you can't take chances, not as a passenger or someone assigned to protect the flight. I mean, who's really the retard, the air marshals, or the Arab guy (and diplomat, who might be expected to have some intelligence and perspective) joking about bombing a flight in 2010, shortly after the underwear bomber incident?

Im not trying to blame or absolve anyone. I think what VB is getting at is the whole ridiculousness of the situation. People in this very thread saying "I would kill the guy" etc. It making national news. The fact that the guy was an arab, and also a smartass... people freaking out. What the hell happened to people?

Making a wisecrack about smoking a cigarette on a plane while Arab=terrorist threat.

Lying to the entire world about WMDs and invading a nation, killing many thousands of innocent people=American hero.

You're not surprised, are you?

being expelled from the country is a little bit different than being charged and possibly imprisoned under a felony

I was disagreeing with the following statement

since he is a diplomat, the felony doesnt matter
Yes it does matter, he may still go to fvck you in the a$$ prison, although the chances are slim. Maybe Qatar would rater keep the U.S. happy than keep this joker out of the pen.

and because he is a diplomat, he will NEVER go to prison (unless for murder.)

Are you blokes serious? Going to jail for having a ciggie and being a smart ass? Get real, this is what me and Shirl were talking about earlier, a complete loss of common sense.

It still remains a gross overreaction.
Here's how to handle the aftermath.
3 blokes in the room, idiot, one from the state department and the Qatari ambassador. Idiot apologizes immediately, state department guy apologizes for the overreaction hoping the Qataris understand the reasons behind it, the Qatari top guy apologizes, promises it won't happen again.

a gross overreaction to someone possibly lighting a bomb hidden in their shoes???

obviously now after the news is reporting it wasnt a bomb, it seems like a overreaction. but when people hear about this or see someone on the plane doing something stupid like this, IMO there is no over reaction....especially when someone already tried to blow their shoes up one other time
