I loved this one too..."How come they have the bad accents and we talk fine?" asked Casey Childress, a waitress at the Pigs R Us Bar-B-Que in Collinsville, a small town near Martinsville and the North Carolina border.

There's also a semi-amusing 80/20 thread in today's Craigslist DC Rants and Raves.

Perhaps this urban/rural divide is more exacerbated here but I've seen this played out everywhere I've lived. Dividing VA at the Rappahannock runs along similar lines as dividing WA state at the Cascade mountains (although probably less so these days and for slightly different reasons).

I think you're still in the "Southern" portion. Don't you live out by Shenandoah?
C'ville, blue island in the Middle. Actually it truly feels like an island, cross the county line and things change quickly. There is a little grocery store near my house that I will actually be the only customer who is not wearing camo or isn't suffering some major sunburn.

Unfortunately much like NoVa housing in the area is really expensive so I am forced to live out in the boonies. I'm close to work but have to haul myself into town to really do anything else.

Ah, OK.

You know, there's more blue on that state map than I would have guessed.

A quick look here shows that many of those blue areas that you wouldn't expect have very high Black populations. Also shows that there is not a lot of racial integration the the more rural areas.

Interesting how the blue areas on that map tend to highlight where most of VA's major universities are located. No big surprises there I guess.

most accurate quote from the article:
When people ask her where she's from, she never says Virginia. "I say I'm from the D.C. area."
for this is what i've said since i left in 1990.

I was born and raised in NoVa, and currently live in Centreville. I attended college at Bridgewater Va, which is off 81 by Harrisonburg. I can honestly say that being in NoVa and most areas of the rest of VA are completely different worlds. The pace of life is different along with the issues that concern the areas.

I always say I am from DC whenever anyone asks where I live.
