I have a mate with some 05 40s and hes looking to get a new top crown so he can use a direct mount stem. Will this work? The only real difference i can see is that the newer crowns drop a bit for the shorter stanchions on late model forks.
I think he'd rather use a Fox crown rather than a aftermarket one.

Pretty sure it will work. The specs shouldn't be different. I say this because I put one on my 2007 Fox 40. Don't quote me on it though. Give fox a ring.

The Risse flat crown for the 40 is much better IMO. If you have a short head tube and run the bars low you will have a lot of stanchion tubes sticking out with the newer drop crown. The Risse one is also lighter. Also, depending on your frame and how low you run the crown it might touch the top tube before the fork bumpers stop the front end from turning. If you have a long head tube and run the bars pretty high then these are not issues.

Here is a photo of the Risse crown.
