so im looking into servicing the 40 my self. i printed out the online instructions and i have a couple questions.

can you get crush washers anywhere or do you need fox crush washers?

does the oil need to be drained from both ends of the fork? or just one or the other ? ( out through the lowers, or just by removing the topcaps?)

any additional tips would be helpfull
thanks

my goal is to change the oil in both legs and possibly install new dust wipers/seals
due to leaking but not gushing of oil out of the left ( spring ) side

As for the washers, I'm not entirely sure either way. Usually those sort of things don't really need to be bought from the manufacturer, but with Fox, you may just be better off buying the genuine part. If you are going to rebuild your fork, just take the lowers and uppers apart completely (i.e. you'll be draining from top and bottom). This will allow you to clean off and wipe down any dirt and other stuff than may have built up inside that just draining the oil wouldn't allow you to do. It'll take a few more minutes, but taking apart and cleaning forks when you rebuild them is part of the reason I'm convinced all my suspension forks have lasted as long as they have.

i got it figured out. didn't have to take off the lowers. it fixed the leaking.

i removed both crowns and the guts of the left leg spring and spacers
drained the oil
then removed the seal with a thin bladed screwgy
then removed the foam o ring cleaned both.
dropped in new oil. reassembled
gonna do the right leg later this week when i get time.

Cool. Just for the record, you can reuse the crush washers no problem. I've fully disassembled my 36 at least half a dozen times and reused the crush washers every time. No leaks yet.
