As lomng as the stroke and eye to eye length is correct no problem. I have seen Hecklers with a 5th element air shock with I believe 2 inch stroke and 7 and 7/8 inch eye to eye length.
Air shocks are a little less supple. maybe even a lot less but it depends on the suspension geometry and set up and personal preferences too. Air usually ramps up more as well so the suspension becomes stiffer deeper into the travel.
The AVA has a larger air chamber which also happens to be adjustable. Air Volume Adjustable = AVA. At max volume a big guy can run more air and have a more linear shock spring.
