My fox float 130RL that came on my trek fuel ex8 has a habit of leaking quite a bit of oil from the air spring side. I don't know whether it's a problem or not, but the bike is second hand so I don't know what might possibly be wrong with it.

Basically, some oil weeps from the seals and dirt will collect on the stanchion. The damper side does not have that problem, and looks clean. I don't see any wear marks but I want to make sure the bike is properly maintained and lasts a while.

I've read the service manual online but they talk about completely disassembling the damper and air spring. Can I avoid that and simply drop the lowers, replace the seals and wipers, and then refill with oil like on a boxxer, or do I have to do a complete tear-down? I'd rather not mess with shimz and springs but I'd like to re-oil the lowers and replace the seals, if necessary.

do I even need to remove the top caps then? Can I simply release the air, remove the lower bolts, tap the rods, drain the earl, drop the lowers, play with the seals, then re-lube and reverse the order?

Never taken apart a 130RL, but on my GF's 36 Float I have to remove the damper and the air spring in order to pull the lowers off.

Sorry, when I read your original post I thought you meant actually disassembling the parts themselves (as you would if you needed to service the damper).

You can do this but you'll need to cycle all the oil out of the damper side before you refill otherwise you run the risk of hydraulic lock. The air spring is crazy simple. You'll need a 5cc pillow pack of Float Fluid or 80-90wt gear oil if you remove the top cap/disassemble the air spring side.
