Anyone try them yet? I hated my fox knee pads, but I assume shin pads would be pretty hard to mess up?

You tallking about just shin or the 911 knee/shin?

If you mean knee/shin, take this from someone who eats sh!t at a high rate of speed with alarming frequency. There is no better mtb pad on the market than the TLD combat pads. If you want, I will take a picture of every knee/shin pad I own in a pile so you know that I have tried almost all of them.....except the newest 661s........but they have the same strap system as the old ones . I use to skate vert for many many years and have the really bad habit of always going straight to my knees. The TLDs don't move. I was like a little girl going to the prom with elvis the first time I fell on those things.

If you're talking about something else that's shin specific, pardon my gushing...... :p

But yeah, the TLDs are awesome. That, or Roach.

Kidwoo, have you tried the roach/race face rally pads fr/dh? I tried the DH and they chafed my outter thighs like no other on pedally days......... Just curious

edit: just looked at that TLD pad looks pretty sweet, you got a pic of the closure system?

btw, Mobius ran those Fox 911's for the good part of last season best I remember, maybe he'll chime in.....

If you are talking about the $15 ones, the knee cups flap all over the place. They worked well after I sewed a 3rd strap on above the knee. For the price it's worth the hassle

I had the old fox 911s and they worked alright. The uper leg closure system pinched the back of my knee though. I saw a picture of Matt Johnston (I think it was him, maybe another go-ride guy) falling at mammoth with the new ones and the knee cap is flapping off of his knee and he hasn't even hit it yet. Those things are a joke if you actually fall on your knee moving. I've seen people get pretty torn up at northstar wearing those.

As far as the roaches, I've tried on a brand new pair and a pair that a buddy has. One of the first things I do is fall down on my knees and see if they move, either on the carpet of a store or on dirt if I'm outside. The Roach knee cap seemed to go too high....ie, my knee cap was going right between the two caps. Plus the elastic straps were kind of weak. But no, that's another one I never bought because I got to try them on first and wasn't impressed. Elastic straps stretch when they need to be the strongest too.

That's one thing that the tlds have that I haven't seen anywhere else is the neoprene strap underneath 1 NON-ELASTIC band that goes over the top of your calf. This is where you need the most secure fit to keep the thing from sliding. Tld pads are the only ones I've seen using a regular strap that doesn't stretch here. Plus the neoprene understrap allows you to crank down the other one. Look at Luc's picture on pinkbike. You can see the neoprene straps on the right side of the pad showing the open back. And ask any skateboarder about neoprene, when it gets wet (sweaty), it doesn't move.

The brand new rockgardn pads look like they copied the design, so maybe they're just as good. I've haven't seen any in person yet.

Too many companies stress over being ventilated and don't build beefy pads. To me, protection is the priority over temperature. I mean jesus, instead of making a pad that works, 661 actually produces knee sleeves to go over your pads to keep them in place. To me that's like sending a tig rod with your brand new frame that's only spot welded at the head tube.

sorry bout the hijack one7one, I've blown a lot of money on leg armor that doesn't work, forgive the rambling :p

I ran the 911s all last season just because i needed new pads and that was all snowshoe had. They were good pads i ate **** all over the country in them and my legs didn't get hacked up bad. I did manage to rip off one of the plastic knee cups but the fox rep said take it to a dealer adn they will give u new pads. They were comfortable pads that worked fine but i'm sure their are betters out their. IE: Roach FR
