Fox Talas RLC leaking oil

pigboy's Fox Talas RLC is leaking oil from the area of an adjustment knob at the bottom of the right hand slider. He says that he has had it looked at a couple of times and nobody has performed a repair that lasts.

Is this a common issue? I'm considering sending the fork back to Fox for repair or overhaul, but if it's a simple repair or it's just going to blow out again I'd like to know ahead of time.

Thanks,

J

Mine has never leaked.

Do you know what repairs they have tried? If I'm not mistaken there is a seal there. Have you checked around in the FOX service documentation, they have some assembly and disassembly videos that might shed some light on it?

OR

You could start with an email to fox or Push or hippie tech suspension or suspension experts or garageworks. I'd hope that at least one might offer some advice beyond send it in and we'll fix if for $X.XX.

My first thought is that it's probably an O-ring, there's usually one under the adjustment knobs on the inside of the leg. They can pretty easily get crushed and go missing during disassembly.

If there have been repairs done on it, the O-ring may be gone now. Either check the service docs, or see if he has a generous friend who would let him take their fork apart to poke around in.

I had a problem with my Manitou's repair knob, the service tech said he'd warranty it @ a 10-day turnaround, or he'd tell me the diameter of the O-ring and I could get it at the hardware store. I think it cost me $0.12.

That o-ring on the manitou forks ALWAYS leaked. I saw many of them cracked/torn/crumbling as the bolt was removed the first time. I think the seat for the o-ring is just rough, and eats the ring as it is tightened/loosened. I bought a bag and replace it every time.

As for the fox..here are the online tech manuals: http://service.foxracingshox.com/consumers/index.htm
The fork uses a crush washer to seal the lowers at the bolt. You should be able to find one at a better hardware store (try mcmaster.com for a bag of them for future use). You might also try a little bit of RTV silicone (auto parts store) to seal the bolt.
