i have an 09 Vanilla R and im trying to drop the travel down to 120mm for dirt jump use. my roommate mentioned i might be able to remove a spacer inside the stanchions but i want to see what the best route would be before i go tearing into my fork. any help is greatly appreciated.

It's not nearly as easy as removing a spacer. The older ones you could move spacers around, but they dropped that feature a few years ago. You'd have to make your own spacer to put on the damper shaft, and then cut down the spring. The short version is, unless you're pretty experienced working on suspension, you can't.
