the law meant to stem growing Islamist influence among some of France’s five million Muslims.
Good thing too. That would be like the growing influence of Christianity on Christians.

Khalil Merroun, rector of the large Evry mosque south of Paris, said the veil debate was difficult enough without Ferry’s comments on beards. “Let’s not pour oil on the fire,” he said Wednesday.
for those of us who have done this, it's a non-event.
Ferry said they might still be able to wear discreet turbans to school but did not mention their facial hair.
for both sexes?
'Sikhs here are victims of the shortcomings of Western language and categories. Secular language has its limits and it has found them with us.' — Jasdev Singh Rai, A Sikhs rights activist
who's next? Trekkies who speak Klingon?
France has reaped widespread criticism for the ban, which it says will keep religion out of state schools and thus promote respect for all religions
how exactly do you gain respect for that which is stifled? pity and empathy maybe

Isn't preventing people wearing what their religion requires them to bringing the issue of religion into schools anyway?

That is, a rule stating a turban cannot be worn is a rule based on a religious premise.

i actually never recognized any direction of this debate. That said, i would much rather be above the fray, but whenever the french is a topic, i get a bit snippy.

maybe i should embrace my inner frog.

Keep up the good work. I don't agree with you on many points. But I like your style and humor. By the way they really do idolize Jerry Lewis over there. Enough said:D .....jdcamb

When you realize that in my mind I am always right. Then things will shape up and go smoothly around here. Just doing my part to prop up my wounded ego. Just think of me as the new Zonic Man.....OK? ....jdcamb
