Ok, so now that he is not just hanging around the funerals of gay people, more people seem to want to do something about him.

I have a question though: In this most Christian of nations (I keep getting told), why aren't the streets around every military funeral where this wackjob is heading to protest filled with silent Christians...a sort of counter protest, if you will? No signs, no prayers, no megaphones...just silent people clogging all the space so that Phelps can't annoy the family.

It would be a real shame if an atheist has to organize something like this...

Good question, I'd participate if that happened in Little Rock.

I guess this is like the question why more Muslim clerics don't speak out against fundamentalist Islam.

The great thing about doing it from a church based perspective is that it would allow the rest of the country and world to see that hate like this isn't what mainstream Christianity is about. From a logistical point of view, it would be easy enough to do. It wouldn't even require travel, just that you spend an hour or two standing quietly when Phelps came to your town.

It's exactly the same thing. And the silence is disturbing.

So, next question: How do we go about starting to organize something like this?

Another good solution would be to have people just punch him in the face at random intervals when he goes out in public.

I'd be down for that. I haven't punched anyone in the face since 91.

Now if Pat Robertson was to assassinate Fred Phelps......I have to think real hard to find a downside. I think subconsciously I don't consider Fred to be a human.

I think the more silent the better...........if he shows up in LR I'll be there, although I think the AR legislature passed a law banning protests at military funerals.

As a Christian I find it terribly disturbing that the more vocal Christians in our society (Dobson for example) have not been more outspoken against this dude.

Anyway, just another reason why I'm becoming more and more ashamed of the state of evangelical Chrisitanity in the US.

That's where I can see a problem. It wouldn't take long before some cunt grabbed a microphone or did an interview and turned it into his own little soapbox, for whatever he's doing. I haven't figured out a way around that, but I'm thinking.

You know why Dobson isn't more outspoken? He agrees with Phelps about homosexuals. He just has a little bit more tact.

I thought the Patriot Guard was doing that. All they do is stand in front of them with American flags so that the grieving families cannot see Phelps and his Mission Idiotic team.

I guess I'm a "bad Christian" because I don't understand why the homosexual thing is so huge on the evangelical agenda. I mean, it's not like they (homosexuals) are going convert masses of heterosexuals into "switching teams". IMO stuff like Desparate Housewives is more detremental to the "normal" heterosexual Chrisitan family than Queer Eye or Will and Grace, the lesbian teachers that live two houses down from me, or the gay church that is just down the block from my house.

So I just don't get it.......................

It's all about perception...If the head of said church perceives an issue with something, then he'll get the congregation riled up for "The Cause"....

At present moment, I feel I'm one of the only ones out there that isn't drinkin' the Kool-Aid...

Good articles!

I cannot believe how someone (let alone an entire parrish....) could become so diluted and delusional to think that the war, that is killing young soldiers the country over, is God's vengence on gays.....this makes my head hurt....a lot....

Edit: Damn....
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to DRB again.
