The services are free, but do the cell phone companies charge you to use them?
Standard airtime charges apply - whatever it normally costs to dial 1800 numbers. TXT fees apply for any TXTs you request which can be expensive if you don't have a TXTing plan.

Reason I asked is I remember reading a page on Snopes about some of the free 411 services. It had said the services were free, but the cell phone companies charged you extra.

I just went to the page and it didn't mention it, so maybe I'm on crack.

It only uses your standard airtime minutes from your calling plan. I looked up the two biggest for you - from their fine print:

Verizon: Calls to ’toll-free’ numbers are toll-free; you will be billed airtime.

ATT: Standard airtime charges apply to 800, 866, 877 and other toll-free calls.

With that in mind, Goog-411 is the fastest/cheapest one but the Microsoft one has other free information services like weather/traffic/etc
