Bicyclists help nab gunpoint robbers, cops say

Jeffrey Blackwell
Staff writer

(October 21, 2005) — A group of bicyclists helped police nab two men who allegedly robbed a couple at gunpoint as they sat in their car last night, police said.

The incident allegedly occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Two people were sitting inside their car in front of 191 Gregory St. when two men approached the car demanding money, police said.

One of the men put a gun to the head of the man sitting in the car taking his wallet and car keys, while the other man took the female victim's purse, police said.

The victims told police the two men fled on foot toward Mt. Hope Avenue and the Genesee River, according to reports.

Officers Jim Belmont and Dan Nowack with police dog Joey apparently tracked the men to the river where a group of youths on bicycles told police they saw the two men running toward the University of Rochester.

Police say they set up a perimeter in the area and officers with the police dog searched the river bank. They found one man hiding along the river, according to police. The man, who allegedly was hiding a gun, was bitten by the police dog, officers said.

The other man was found a short distance away, police said.

Thomas Walker, 17, and Michael Bell, 16, both of Rochester, were charged with first degree robbery. They were being held at Monroe County Jail.

Yea it would have been so cool if we were like chasing them down the board walk and then like bunnyhoped the railing and landed on the beach, and started ripin down the surf till we caught up with em and then dove off the bike and tackled them to the ground, and were like your under arrest. That would have been sweet.

good stuff. i especially like this part:

" The man, who allegedly was hiding a gun, was bitten by the police dog, officers said. "

K-9 don't play! we have a shirt here, (that we're not allowed to wear anymore) that says, "if you didn't get stitches, you didn't get bit".
