So a friend of mine kept telling me that his XT cassette kept coming loose on his King rear hub. I though he was just being a wuss and not torqueing it down enough. Then I go and try to replace my old worn XT cassette with a new one on my King hub. It did not matter how much I tightened that sonofbiatch but the main cassette body would remain loose.
Upon closer inspection the smallest cog on the new cassette does not have the spline cut all the way through, there is a shoulder that rests on the hub body that prevents it from pushing in on the rest of the cassette. I am sure everything works well on a Shimano hub but not on a King hub. Talking to the folks at King it looks like I will need to add a spacer and possibly use a special king lockring.
I never had a problem with older Shimano Cassettes, seems to me this is part of Shimano's marketing strategy to force people into buying all "S" brand components. I will buy the required spacers and crap but my next cassette will probably be a SRAM.
