So a friend of mine kept telling me that his XT cassette kept coming loose on his King rear hub. I though he was just being a wuss and not torqueing it down enough. Then I go and try to replace my old worn XT cassette with a new one on my King hub. It did not matter how much I tightened that sonofbiatch but the main cassette body would remain loose.

Upon closer inspection the smallest cog on the new cassette does not have the spline cut all the way through, there is a shoulder that rests on the hub body that prevents it from pushing in on the rest of the cassette. I am sure everything works well on a Shimano hub but not on a King hub. Talking to the folks at King it looks like I will need to add a spacer and possibly use a special king lockring.

I never had a problem with older Shimano Cassettes, seems to me this is part of Shimano's marketing strategy to force people into buying all "S" brand components. I will buy the required spacers and crap but my next cassette will probably be a SRAM.

Thats normal, see here. It could be king or shimano who are to blame, shimano for changing the cassette slightly or king for having too long splines.

Are you sure you arn't missing the washer from the back of the cassette. You might be able to space it out far enough if you use the washer from your old cassette.

The washer looks like this.

Those pictures were posted for someone else having similar issues. There have been some minor changes over the years, but don't worry. The riveted cassettes (LX, 105) and I am sure many others come with ~1.2-2mm wavy spacer. It will solve your problem instantly. Shop types usually save them off of old cassettes. Go to your LBS and ask for one. If they ask for money, offer to buy a tube instead. Just so they can't call you a d* for being cheap. The parts are being saved from the trash, so they shouldn't ask for much/anything.

well...not all spacers are saved from trash...a lot of shops buy them and stock them...so you cant really blame them for not just giving them away...

I know not all, but cassette spacers have a wide range of uses. We would always make sure we had a supply.

Westy- Just ask for any bolt together cassette that a shop has thrown out, take it apart, and you'll have the spacer you need.
