I had another good ride this weekend. Met up with a few friends at Hall Ranch, just north of Boulder. Weather was perfect and I felt good. Its a great trail (although a bit short) that starts out with some decent singletrack that quickly turns into a 1.5 mile climb through some extremely cool rock gardens. Once through that, you drop down into a small valley then continue climbing super sweet singletrack to a top loop, which takes you on even more REALLY nice swoopy singltrack. You can do the loop as many times as you want, then come back down the trail you rode up. I love this trail.

Here's some nice views just leaving the trailhead

Charlie as he starts up the first technical climb

Looking back down on the singletrack

One of the many technical rocks sections of the first climb. My rate of success with this section is about 50%.

Old line. New line.
The old line is the 2+ ft rock step. The new line is the obvious line to the right

Old line, new line #2
The old line actually took you up and over the rock to the right. The path that you see didn't exist until about 2 months ago. It used to be a deep rock "V" that was impossible to pedal through, so you had to go high to the right. So first you had to clean the "step", then cut it hard left and power up and over the rock bulge without sliding down into the V. My rate of success on this move is about 25% (old line, that is).

Jon about to clean a tricky rock garden just around the bend from the "step"

Another view of what Jon just cleaned

Nice view from the top of the first climb. More sweet singletrack awaits across the valley

Nice view looking north as you drop into the valley

More nice views at the intersection of the loop

I love sweet swoopy singletrack

Old homestead

View from the top. Longs Peak and Mt Meeker off in the distance

That's all for now. I wished I'd taken more pics on the climb up. There are so many really cool rock moves, but this trail is just too fun to keep stopping all the time. I can clean every section, but I've yet to clean them all at one time. Some day I may do the climb non-stop, but I haven't yet.

Also, how the hell is everything so green in AUGUST??
I swear, I think we've had more rain this year than the last 3 combined. Its been great. Plus, we rode from 11 till 2:30 and I don't think the temp got above 85*. Maybe cooler. It was a GREAT day.

I am gonna be out there in october is there any chance you could show me that trail? Pretty please!
Dude, I'd love to show you this trail. For anyone coming to Denver and riding XC, Hall Ranch is a must. What date's are you coming out? Let me know asap because Oct is going to be busy. I may be in Fruita either the 2nd or 4th weekend. We're having my daughters b-day party on the 1st weekend, and my anniverary is the 3rd weekend. We can definitely try to hook up, though.

Did you go investigate the old homestead?
Not this time. I've looked around it before but, if I remember correctly, you're not allowed inside as its a historical landmark or something...

Cool!

You should have had Douglas come up and start a fire in the fire place.

Yeah. It's a much more "normal" year this year. The last 'bout 8 or 9 have been quite a bit hotter and drier than a "normal" year. Actually, it might even be a bit wetter than normal this year........ it's niiiiice. :)

I know, I know...... but it's like the trails in the Springs. I've heard good things, but when you've got Deer Creek, Indian Creek, Roxy, Falcon, Apex, Chimney, Green Mt, White Ranch, Dakota, Matthews, Red Rocks, LotB, and Golden Gate closer......... you just end up going to one of those. :D

Someday. Dammit. Someday.

gawd... .. I love hall ranch soo much. I was pretty unhappy when I rode it last month and found all those trail sanitations. Any Idea why they decided to tame the trail so much? They pretty much removed one of my favorite tech sections about 4 turns below the rock step (which thankfully still is a challenge if you dont take the easy way). Its still my favoritte trail around boulder, but my zeal has deminished some.

Anyone who wants to hit up hall ranch whenever, send me a pm and Ill be there for sure. :thumb:

Thanks for the offer and if we cant hook up, maybe you can give me some local input on directions. Ill let you know when it gets closer!

I think I know what section you're talking about. Kind of a "rippling" rock garden section? Not sure how else to describe it. Right after you take a steep lefthand switchback, right? What I'm talking about is right before picture #4. You take the switchback, then power through the "rippling" rock. A couple easy pedal strokes, then you hit the rocks in pic #4. After that, you've got a few easy moves, then on to the "step" and if you clean that, the rocks in pic #7. One of those sections in that sequence always kills me. I can make them all, just not all at once.
